That's what's known as steak tartare, Boar. When I worked at the butcher shop, we would take fresh ground right out of the hopper and sprinkle salt and pepper on it from the shakers that were there for just that purpose. I'm sure reinhard1 can tell you about doing that, too.  It was actually quite popular in the 70's as a canape at dinner parties, served on a cracker and topped with chopped onions and dill. Quite tasty. Never hurt me. Not that I'm aware of, anyway. :P

Steak tartare is a meat dish made from finely chopped or minced  fresh raw beef[1][2] or horsemeat.[3] It is often served with onionscapers and seasonings (the latter typically incorporating fresh ground pepper and Worcestershire sauce), sometimes with a raw egg yolk, and often on rye bread.

The name tartare is sometimes generalized to other raw meat or fish dishes.

That was very common in Germany [maybe still is].  We lived in a commune were everything was shared.  Pigs, chicken and some cattle.  I would eat it right now.  Just have to have the fresh ground beef ground daily.  That's the case in most service counters [Cub anyway].  Has to be good bread [whole grain or rye with a nice hard crust].  Salt and pepper and onions for me.  We grew up on it.  I remember hogs that were freshly killed and they took the casings [cleaned them] for sausage.  The stomach also which was filled with blood and some meat and cooked right away.  They used to give us kids chunks of it still warm.  Farmers fresh ground is great, but I would get the fresh ground from the butcher shop as well.  Think I'll get some when I come back from up north this weekend.   Heck we eat the venison liver and heart right at deer camp.  good luck.

As Jefferson Airplane said long ago (in Eat Starch Mom)

You say
nothing's right but natural things--you fool.
Poison oak is a natural plant why don't you
put some in your food.
I don't care if there's chemicals in it
s long as my lettuce is crisp!
Preservatives might just be preserving you,
I think that's something you missed!
Ya you missed it.

Cub foods is in the middle of a three day sale, runs through tomorrow 10/24. Spare ribs are 1.99 a pound, cans of Campbell's cream of mushroom and cream of chicken are 59 cents a can, limit four. There are some other things on sale I can't remember, I figured folks would be most interested in the spare ribs.

What is up with bacon this Fall?! No good stuff on sale anywhere! I haven't been able to stock up this Fall...and that's a first for me, bacon is  usually on sale in the Fall.

Not sure if it's still going on, but Cub has been selling 3 lb packs for $9 or so.  Their good thick cut applewood smoked stuff.  That's as good as I've seen.

I related earlier this Spring how the jerks wouldn't honor an ad here in Dorkchester. Second time they've done it to me. I have better things to do than deal with idjits. Since then I've taken all my business elsewhere. I'll stick to the good side of town.

Well, I haven't been on this page forever.  I see RH is back.  Hey Reinhard!!  Just got back from Costco to buy a new Food Saver - old one crapped the bed.  They have a manufacturers discount of $30.00 going on their $149.00 model.  Anyway, walked over to the meat dept and found whole PRIME brisket for $3.79 lb.  Picked up a 12 lber.

Was in Walmart in Blaine yesterday and the had whole CHOICE briskets for $2.49 lb.  A couple of really great deals.  Have never done brisket so may be looking for some advise.  May cut in two so I do the flat in one smoke and the big point in another.

Oh, and Adlis has BB ribs going for $2.99 lb.  Need to stop by there tomorrow.

Hi Jim!!! Made some good buy's there!!!  The Walmart here in Andover only sells Select Briskets.  You sure it said Choice on there?  Great price on there.  Just ask on that brisket Jim.  Maybe start a thread on here and we can go through the whole thing.  good luck.

RH - It was definitely Choice I saw at Walmart.  If I've learned anything from you, it's to check that out closely.  I figure if it doesn't say on the package, its probably Select.  Costco also had a couple of smaller 4lb flats that were Choice, but they wanted 4.99 lb for those.

Just be sure, if the price at walmart seems really good, to check the sell by date.

I got burned by that a few years ago.  Saw some meat, several packages, for a really good price, bought it home, got it out of the sealed package, it was bad.  Had to throw it all away.

Now I always check the sell by date, and don't buy meat at walmart.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
