BBQ Sauce

Recommended Posts

What's everyone's favorite sauce? For years I used Sweet Baby Rays Honey Bbq. But a neighbor let me try a sauce he likes called Head Country. That is by far my favorite sauce now, and everyone I know who tries it agrees. Anyone else have a good sauce?

Sweet Baby Rays, Head Country, Stubbs and Famous Dave's are all pretty good sauces right out of the bottle.... but I like thinner sauces and I have no problem using them as a base. I'll add some apple juice, wooster, usually some black pepper and cayenne and maybe a few pinches of BBQ rub.

One sauce I buy for the Summer season is Rudy's original. It's a thinner sauce, that is peppery. I also use their rub, which is a spicy blend.

Are you talking Rudy's from Texas? We have a CM in Austin and when somebody from work goes there we make them bring back some sauce and rub. Good Stuff.

Arthur Bryants Sweet Heat- World Famous Kansas City BBQ - I lived in KC for a time and now can get my favorite sauce online pretty reasonably. Other varieties available as well.

Sweet Baby Rays, Ken Davis for brands.

I've like mixing two from the Rack Shack in Burnsville. I mix their sweet Memphis style with the bland zip of their Savanna. I like the spicy temp of the Savanna but it is missing something and the Memphis style seems to fill the void. laugh

they all sound great! here is one that an old butcher [yes older than me] told me about a few years ago. i use it as is and also as a base for messing around with other flavors. very simple yet very good.

1 cup of ketchup

1 cup of western salad dressing

enough apple juice to thin it to your liking

put the ketchup and western salad dressing in a pan and heat it up just to the point of simmering. then while stirring add the apple juice till you get the thinness you like. i use it as a mop sauce, so i like it thin. dont like it thin then just omit the apple juice. great on pork and chicken. good luck.

My bro-in-law goes to Austin for work and when he does, I make him bring me back Rudy's rub... fantastic!

I use Jim Dandies sauce made over here in Western WI. It is a great bottled BBQ sauce. Their Hickory is good for most everyone and there Hot to Trot is great for those he like heat...

Good Luck!

Ken

Ken Davis original for bottled, but, usually make my own. Ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, grape jelly, and all sorts of seasonings from the spice rack to suit....I like to slow cook the sauce in a smoker ,heavy apple wood smoke......yummy.

that's something to think about. slow cook the sauce with some smoke. i think cherry wood is good for that also. has a milder smoke flavor and would blend in when smoke is used in the cooking proccess. thanks for the tip Griz!!!good luck.

BigButzBarbeque in Wisconsin has some tasty sauces. I swear there must be something illegal in there because I don't like sweet sauces; but I can't get enough of this stuff! 4 levels of heat (including Ghost peppers in the hottest) and a mild cranberry that is to die for. Comes in jars from small batches.

Sweet Baby Ray's Honey BBQ has been my favorite store bought brand, but I often make my own. I make a basic BBQ sauce (ketchup, brown sugar, seasonings, etc.) but than I use a lot of pineapple, hot sauce, and molasses. mmmmm

I've never even heard of Head Country, but I might give it a try now.

Yep, stop there pretty often. Got a place just up the road from there. Their ribs are exceptional!

Big Butz is just north of Siren, WI on Hwy 35. No, I don't believe they sell it in the cities. It is available online, and at the Burnett Dairy Co-Op between Grantsburg and Siren on Hwy 70.
