Spilled Gas - got on everything!

On one of my trips to and from the lake my little red gas can peed all over most of my gear. My biggest dilemma is that every one of my jigs now smells like Gas (petroleum). I fear that the smell or taste will be noticeable to the fish and will turn them away. Is there anything I can do to clean them up without damaging them any more? Or am in for a costly trip to replace them all?

I would not get to bent about the gas smell as long as no paint starts pealing. I fished with a guy who was a mechanic and always had greasy hand and he always out fished anybody in the boat. I swear it was his greasy hands that had no human scent ever! Lots of guys you WD40 for a scent attraction.

My gas can stays home, no way in a days time can I run the auger out of gas, I will use less than 3/4 of a gallon for the whole season and I drill 1000 +/- a year....

Maybe try some dawn dishsoap, they were using that on birds and animals that got caught in the oil spill.

ditto...kind of. No chance of gas spills anymore after going propane last year!

Lay it all out in the air. the gas will evaporate, and the fish don't mind anyway.

My gas can only comes with me when I drive 4 1/2 hours north, not when I go to my local lakes. Granted, I have only once run through an entire tank of gas on a couple trips but I would hate to be that far from home and not have the option to fill the tank.

Thanks for the replies. I have had it sitting in open air for couple days and it seems to be clearing up. If the fish don't care then at least it will be more pleasant for me!!

If you have a hair dryer handy I would give them a good blowing out and while doing so rotate them a bit so that all the surfaces get heated up some and a lot of air going over them.

use the dish soap just soak for awhile rinse and dry.

Dish soap option sounds good. Spend the $3 on one of your go to lures, that way if you are out fishing with your smelly ones and your having a tough time, at least you can tie on a new one to see if it helps.

I didnt see were he asked what you did with your gas can I believe he asked what he could do to clean up his tackle. Besides drilling a 1000 holes through 10" of ice is alot different tham

Normaly is well over 24" cept for this year....Well over 10" at the moment to....

Soak them in CLR. That will disolve all the gas and your jigs will come out looking like you just took them out of the package.

Ive read about a study several places that showed that fish had very little negative reaction to lures with gas/oil scent.

Though fish showed a very high disinterest in the scents of bug spray/deet and sun tan lotions.
