deer harvest reports ? anyone

Recommended Posts

The number of deer harvested through the first three days of the 2011 firearms season is behind last year's pace is down about 18 percent based on registrations. The DNR's Lou Cornicelli says weather is likely to blame. Cornicelli says hunters didn't have the greatest conditions over the weekend, when it was pretty windy with rain in some places. He predicts hunters will likely catch up on some of those deer over subsequent weekends. The firearms season runs nine days in the southern two-thirds of the state and 16 days in the two zones in northern Minnesota.

Anybody that spent some time in the north woods knows that LC and the DNR are way off on the herd, it is way down! We hunted Carlton County and got 2 for 4 guys and we did better than anyone that I talked too. I heard alot of groups that were like 0 for 5 plus people......My first time since the 90's that I have not got a deer opening weekend. I hunted till tue. and it was dead calm and perfect and still seen nothing in some of my go to spots.

Hunting for our group of 5 was below average for our standards. Not a lot of sightings. Each one of us could have shot a doe or a yearling buck. Wind was horrible and our faces were wind burned. We hunted till tuesday.

I do agree with oldendays. Deer numbers in our area seem to be down. We also spend most of our time in carlton county. We are fortunate to have some great places to hunt. We hunt some farms that have fields in heavily wooded areas. The past 5 years we have had about 50 deer a field in the evenings. This year we have never seen more than 10 deer in a field. But every area is different.

Hoping for a better second wkd.

My Dad and I hunt in Zimmerman on private land and seen 1 over the weekend with the wind. Monday through today we are seeing more deer but are being really picky. Can't get a doe to come in range and the bucks that are in range are small. Holding out for an 8 outside the ears.

Very slow for us in the LP area, as it seems to have been for most. The guys in the hills to the NE did better as there were more places out of the wind. Have hunted every night this week & one morning. Haven't seen a deer since Sunday late afternoon.

Wow 50 deer in a field would be amazing, I don't see that many deer in MN archery through muzzleloader season.

Rifle hunted the weekend 2 does for four hunters near Frazee.

Bow hunted near the metro and shot a 128" 9 point Wednesday evening.

Have seen more wolves than deer this week. Hunting was very poor Sat-Mon, but picked up a little on Tues and Wed. Going back up tonight, but I couldn't resist logging in to see how others were doing. Hunting private land around Babbitt.

This past weekend we went 1-5 with only one person in our group seeing deer. It was too windy and too warm. We are hoping for colder weather coming and it doesn't look like it will be this weekend. Don't know where all the deer went that we were seeing on the trail camera pics! Did find a couple rubs that were new. Hopefully this weekend will be better!

Well people chime in,is 2011 a boom or bust year. Harvest may be down, was the wind the factor? I think numbers were down and I noticed less sign this year and less deer in the evenings. My guess is after firearms season closes the harvest will be down 21% statewide. Whats your guess?

We had plenty of sign and bucks on cam, they just were not moving during the day.

We went 3 for 11, our slowest year in recent memory, deer sign was way down as well.

On another note, we dispatched 6 coyotes, the most for us during deer season, pushed one woods today and kicked out 10, only got one of those, we've got a yote problem that needs to be dealt with or it's going to be tough deer hunting for a few years.

My season ended today and i ended up with 3 does a fawn and a 10 pt. Total for the group was 5 does, 1 fawn, a 10 pt, and a 5 point. The 10 pt was the only deer i saw with horns. From what im reading and from talkin to friends, i did the best by far. But i do agree i think the numbers are WAY down. 10 years ago i would see close to 50 deer a season the last 2 years it was 15 - 20 deer. I know the wind and warmth played a huge facto.

We ended up getting one deer for the two of us. That deer was shot on Thursday and we didn't see any deer over the weekend. While walking to my dad's stand this afternoon I noticed a dead 6 pointer that had been shot and the coyotes got to it. It had been dead awhile, probably a week. Must have been shot and wounded and ran off and died there. Sightings of deer were down but I'm sure the warm and windy weather had something to do with it. There was plenty of sign around (trails, rubs, scrapes) but few sightings. This was in Area 223.

Hunted 179 opening weekend, Our party went 1 for 8 with a forkhorn which is really low. Hunted 178 from Monday through yesterday and we went 5 for 5 with a 9 pointer, 2 forks, a spike, and a doe. The guy who shot the 9 pointer let at least three more bucks go. He said he had to look hard to find a deer without antlers. One of the forks was shot on Monday afternoon right after the wind died down and the other 4 were shot Thursday morning with the fresh snow on the ground.

Where are all the does and fawns? We weren't seeing them in the woods.
