How far off the beaten path?

My stand is over 2 miles from the nearest road. If I walked in on foot it would take me the better part of an hour if I walked in the dark and most of the day if I walked in daylight.

From where we camp it takes me about 10 minutes to walk to my main stand...5 minutes up the road and 5 minutes thru the woods to my stand. I have another stand that would take me about 40 minutes to walk back too.. I have no reason to trek back that far because my main stand is a producer every year.

From the end of the nearest logging road we have a little over a half mile hike with all of our gear, plus two canoes, to a river. From there we paddle just over a mile to get to where we set up camp and stay for the week. From camp, my stands are anywhere from 20 minutes to the closest area I hunt, up to about a 1 hour and 15 minute hike to the farthest stand location I've hunted. Its a great time, but you have to learn to trust your compass or you are out of luck since there isn't a single trail or path anywhere in the woods.

I should come clean. We do use ATV’s to cover most of the 2-mile trek to our “base camp” which is basically nothing more than our ATV parking area and where we have our hanging pipe. From there the first deer stand is probably about 100 yards with others as far away as 1/4 mile or so. Once we’re out there, we’re there for the duration. If we get too cold and need to warm up we’ll start a small fire but for the past decade or more the weather has been quite warm. Been a long time since I recall a firearms season at -20F or even below 0F for that matter.

Depends. I have one less than 100 yards from our shack, and have others that are a good 1/4 mile away from where we park ATV's or SXS. One that I can think of is a good 45 minute walk from the parking area in the dark, with no trail. Thank god for GPS! Makes the pre-light walks much easier in the thick stuff.

I have hunted mostly within a few hundred yards of a road on public land and have had good success. I obviously am not familiar with the areas where you hunt, but I don't necessarily see a greater advantage of walking 1/2 a mile or more to get good shooting unless your strictly going after the monsters then I can see it. Just my perspective, hope everyone has a safe opener!

We stay at a cabin on Winnie. My spot is in Chipp.Nat.Forest.about 15 min drive from cabin to where my logging road dead ends / narrows down. From there its about a 650 yd walk up and down some oaky reviens and shelfs. I put my stand in a spot where three diff reviens come into one (looks like a big chickin footprint from above). My stand is on SSw side of this natural deer highway/funnel. To be honest, I really walked back that far because it is national (public)land and my ladder stand is up and free game so I was nervous to put it too close to any road. I doubt anyone would randomly walk off a 1/2 mile + in that area so I felt good about putting it there.

Mostly I hunt large tracts of public national forest land with few roads. Farthest afield from the road I've hunted is about 4 miles. Farthest off the road I harvested a deer was 2 miles. That was a nice long sweaty drag! Mostly I'm within half a mile of a road.

I drive about 2 minutes down the road from deer camp, park and walk about 5 minutes to get into my stand. I am probably only 400-500 yards off the main road. Seems really close, but every year it puts deer on the ground for me, so I stick with it.

10 minute walk from where I park, 15 if it's warm & I put too many clothes on to start with. I can drive my truck to within about 5' of my tree if I want to though. Best opening morning stand of the 18 or so that we'll have occupied. It's about 500 yards from a county tar.

Isn't it strange Rodd, how good spots can sometimes be so close to roads? When I get in my stand, I can watch the traffice drive up and down the road through the trees (headlights at least), but there are always deer moving around in that area, so it works for me!
