Deer Camp Name and Your Tradition

My favorite time of year and I am always like seeing the different names of deer camps and the traditions each one has. Our deer camp is called Superior Sportsman's Lodge with our mission statement "Always Scoping for Huge Racks". Our tradition is we all wear our camp shirts the Friday before opener and whoever shoots first becomes the "Camp Cook".

guess we never named our camp. we stay in my trusty 1974 Jako camper. three of us and my brother rides up from Duluth and occationaly stays for the night. maby we can think of an appropriate name for that place. hunted the same area since the 60's. i have the only 4 wheeler and never ride on it. i let the young guns ride it. i enjoy the half mile walk to the stand and back. my brother says he is going to buy a new one this year.

i've been the cook for the most part. lately however the guys [my son-in law and my soon to be son-in law] now are making some soups and freezing them in vacume bags and we warm them up at night in simmering water. one meal is on me, and i'm thinking pulled pork. as far as tradition we always meet at noon for lunch and after the hunt we make a fire and sit around with some cold ones and occational bumps [ somekind of manhatten mix]. great time of the day. sit around, relax, talk about the day and look up at the stars that are so crystal clear and brilliant up north. shooting stars and satelites and an occational howl from a nearby wolf pac once in awhile.

looking for a hat for the one who gets the largest deer of the season. guess that will be somekind of tradition. maby get one made that says "King of Venison" or something in that order. the person wears it till someone surpasses that previous deer [only in deer camp]. cant wait. good luck.

Ours has always been named for the owner of the land we stay at. "Arnes hunting camp" Our traditions are scaring the [PoorWordUsage] out of all the new young guys with threats of eating their first kills heart and running around the cabin naked in the snow! None of which we have ever made them do!

We have a big meal the night before or the first day of the hunt.

My wife and anothers ones wife come and make us a huge supper and lots of appitizers. We also tip a few. The 2 cooks, our wives drink a little blackberry brandy.

A few that hunt with myself, my son and a few friends I only see during the rifle hunt as they live in North Dakota.

One of the guys that is from North Dakota that hunts with all of us started to hunt with his daughter about 8 years ago. The past 3 seasons hunting on her own, Tracy has shot 3 8 pointers. I have mounted all 3 on a plaque with her name and will continue to do so for free as long as she continues to drop one.

My father passed away there 9 years ago during the deer season. My brother had a flower display made out of a wire deer full of flowers. I kept the metal frame and I keep it in the shed and every year on the opener, I get it out of the shed and put it by the tree he hunted in. Dad is with us all every deer hunting opener.

It's a good time to talk about our lives for the past year.

I enjoy the meal and all the [PoorWordUsage] as much as I enjoy the actual hunting. Always fun for a bunch of friends to get together and hunt

Ours "The Ottertail County Mafia" and we crank the song Big Iron as we rotate through our gun selections from a M1 30 carbine to 25.06 to 30.06 to the true big irons the .357 mag and .44 mag. Looks more like a militia than a mafia lol. But, not so far down the road is the true Mafia out of Chicago actually the mob but we call those crooked nosed suit wearers mafia and that's actually true and I want no part of them boys, they are not up here hunting that's for sure.

We have whitetail ridge south and Whitetail ridge north, both being hunting cabins to access the land. As afar as the tradition goes we are bringing in the kids into the mix as they grow. My daughter has sat on stand with us from 7-11 years old and has taken a few deer already. My son is asking to sit this year and he is 9 so he can start hunting next year under the mentor program. I have been bringing the kids to "deercamp" since they were quite small and we have enjoyed just being in camp and cooking and keeping a good bonfire going for the guys in the field and taking part in the comraderie of being in camp. I'll take the kids up again this year to be part of camp and sit for any of them interested that aren't able to hunt yet. They get to hear the stories and take part in the elation of the harvest and still hang out with us. I wouldn't trade it for the world! It is great fun having them in camp and just enjoying the traditions that surround it.

No name for the camp, but we always have the same traditions...

Cocktails and beers at the bar all day on Friday before opener, done drinking by 7 PM. One of the wives picks us up in a mini bus to head to the bar and then drives us up to our deer shack to leave us for the week. First one up Saturday morning and sitting in their stand doesn't have to cook for the entire week. (We've had someone out at 3:30 am) First one back at camp on Saturday cooks for the week. (Luckily we have someone that enjoys cooking and is usually in by 4, but we've had people sitting in their stands until 8:00 pm)

Monday is poker night and Tuesday is cribbage night. Schedules are always adjusted based on any deer taken that day. We normally lose the majority of the group (city slickers) on Wednesday afternoon. Otherwise campfires every night sharing stories. Normally sleeping by 10.

Everyone buys $20 in lottery tickets (any game) and puts them into a kitty. First buck takes the pot.

Back strap/tenderloin breakfast with potatoes and eggs (when we get one.)

The last person to shoot a deer is responsible for the final cleanup of the shack.

Every single one in place since before I hunted there, I enjoy every one. Can't wait!

Although it's not a tradition, I usually loan my brother my truck as he hunts opening Monday when I am at work. Two years ago I was sent a picture of my truck with two wheels off the ground, last year my four wheeler was used to cover my truck with mud....can't wait for the antics to begin.

Although this may be inappropriate for the site, the first one to get a buck hangs the buck "parts" from the brothers stand, truck mirror, or camp "Christmas" tree. We always eat out before opener. Loved the Hitching Post in Holyoke before it burned down. I made jerky for the upcoming weekend tonight. Need to get a camp name, that will be a goal for the season, aside from filing the meat pole.

You got me back, I laughed reading your post. If we were going to talk about deer camp pranks, that could be a whole different thread! We have our share and I should have included "pranks" as it's own line item. I've had my share of buck anatomy hanging off of my stand and truck for that matter in the past.

I dont have a name besides deer camp, my father and I go for 5 days to some land my family has up north we have a great time have a game dinner and spend time with relatives we dont see often, usually a few deer too. Here are a few pictures they do it more justice than I can describe.

Our camp is called "The Great Silence". It is an old railroad warming house. We have several traditions. We have a big turkey dinner "better than Thanksgiving" every opening Saturday. Everyone brings one meal for the week. We have a "hunter of the day award" and they are required to map out there hunt/kill on a white board. We also have a wild goose chase award (rarely awarded) for anyone wounds or has to track a deer has to etch their name in an old ratty copper goose statue. Of course their is cribbage and hearing all the same stories and laughing our butt off. Can't wait.

Ours is Five Bucks Lodge as there are 5 of us that own the land. There are 2 trailers pulled and blocked up on the land and additions built on. We even have a sauna. We usually have a big turkey dinner on Friday night with the whole group of 3 generations. Every one of the "Bucks" is in charge of 1 meal and cleanup. Our card game of choice is Buckueker. Our traditions include slow cooking deer heart and tenderloins with onion and mushrooms. We also have a trophy hat for the biggest buck shot during the season. The winner then has to supply the hat for the next year with proper embroidering like "Big Buck 2011" and "Five Bucks Lodge".

Black Sheep Deer Camp is the name of our camp...it was started by 3 fathers and 3 sons. we have 360 acres near Lake Bronson. Steak night is fri night...sat is spareribs and kraut... then prime rib on sun. we have stuck to this menue since 1992 when camp was established. everyone brings a noon meal. we all pay dues quartely for camp expenses and up-keep on equipment. it is a wonderful place to b....can't wait till next thursday when we all arrive

Not going to post the name...cuz it includes parts of our names....and we don't need PETA and the "antis" burning our place down, we have had several fires already.....it also has a corporate ring to it....the "Occupy Wallstreet" crowd may think we a bigtime 1% corporate farmers.

We don't really have a name for our camp. We have a tradition where I do all the cooking. Every year I bring up a bag of dog treats. Anyone who complains about my cooking gets a dog treat. And that includes underdone, overdone, etc. The guys LOVE my cooking

Our camp is known as the "Golden Acre Boys". Our camp moto is "Everybody Started Run'in" After one guy shot 2 fawns accidentally some years ago. We started 10+yrs ago as 2 kids hunting public land. We now own 80 acrs with a nice shack and have more good spots than we do hunters. I don't know any other guys who have a hunting party that actually have bought and built in the past 10 yrs. seems rare. Best investment ever!

Our Camp is called "Land of the Giants" We started out Camping for the first couple of years and about 5 years ago we moved an old Rambler up. I always hunted with my Dad and uncles when I was younger but then they kind of lost the land they hunted and that camp fell apart so I joined a buddy from High School. It was quite the change since my Dad and Uncles seemed to know a lot more about the hunting aspect and this new group Knew more about the Party aspect. There are about 15 of us up there and I would say only 4-5 dedicated hunters make it in the woods opening morning. Everyone has a great time since most of these guys are in their late 40's and Early 50's and have been friends since high school. They tell old stories from when they were my age and younger and its just a great time. There is always way too much food. About 10 crockpots with ribs, wings, soups, dips and everything inbetween going. Some of them have even surprised me through the years and actully shot a deer. hahaha. wouldn't trade it for anything.

No name for our group... was started by my Dad and a bunch of his buddies about 30 years ago. The core has been together almost the whole time.... spent 20 or so years on a different piece of land that they leased for years, but lost that.... now on public up in the Merrifield area... we stay at a guys cabin on the lake.... plenty of great stories that seem to get funnier every year.... my favorite couple of days of the year.... more about the camp and less about the deer every year... wouldn't trade it for anything in the world and can't wait to pass the tradition on to my boys as they grow up.... enjoy the tradition fellas... be safe.... and don't forget to take it all in.... you never know when this camp will be your or your buddies last...

Amen to that bro, we have lost 4 guys in our camp in the last 5 years or so, and two of them were only in their 40's.
