LightningBG
My Q, is what do you do with the grounds?Depending on where you are...throw it in the garbagepack it outthrow it in the firedig a hole and bury itthrow it in the woods
flipper
I really like cowboy coffee when primitive camping. It just seems right. The grounds are pretty harmless, In the leave no trace philosophy of the BWCA I throw them in the primitive latrine. Where they will be removed with the other goodies in there. TooTallTom
I don't think the latrine is a good disposal point for anything buy human waste (unbagged) and TP. Having food refuse in there seems like a bad idea. I'm probably being overly cautious, but a lit fire or a buried in a hole a long ways from camp both seem like options less likely to cause trouble with wildlife. Powerstroke
TTT is correct. You should never put any food products in the latrine. The latrine in the BWCA is not a biffy at the ballpark. Nobody goes out there and cleans them out and hauls it away. It biodegrades. Having food scraps in the latrine invites bears and other critters to try to get the food out. Redlantern
plus one to Powerstrokes and TooTall's post. Digging them latrines ain't easy in the Canadian shield.
flipper
My mistake. Sounds like if you follow the rules to the letter they should be packed out.
TooTallTom
No sweat, flipper. No one is born knowing everything. And my turnover rate from didn't know to learned to forgot is, unfortunately, lightning fast.
B@ssmaster
BWCA we bring percolators, sometimes we use a filter, sometimes not. For the Yellowstone backcountry I found a press designed to work in a standard Nalgene water bottle. Works great! Don't need to pack in any extra containers, percolators, etc. If you need to pack really light, I highly recommend them.
Scott M
Starbucks "Via" instant, and I hate most instant coffees. Try this and you'll never go back. Coffee drinkers all know percolators make the worst tasting coffee anyway. French press is good but a lot of work and mess.
reinhard1
some of the best coffee i have ever had was at camping with a percolator. use the same thing at deer camp. i think the coffee brand has a lot to do with it, but everything tastes better outdoors. to be fair, i haven't tried the instant coffee [but i have never had a good cup of instant coffee]. it may also be generational and old fashion that i like percolated coffee outdoors and too stubborn to change. good luck. JimBuck
I bought an AeroPress a few years back for camping/fishing and ended up using it at home as well. Great little device.
chad austin
What do you use to make coffee while camping? Camping and in the fish house I like to make egg coffee in the morning and keep the coleman drip going the rest of the day.
OnAFly
I had a polycarbonate french press until it broke (my fault). I'll probably buy another. I would make coffee at work with that thing. It was the best coffee maker I've ever had.
Northlander
Im not a big coffee geek so I do just fine with the big C stainless perculator. I like how hot it makes the coffee so when I toss it in the Thermos for the day it stays nice and hot. Im not a strong coffee drinker and I find the pressed coffee too strong to my liking. bobbymalone
but i have never had a good cup of instant coffeethat's because it doesn't exist. i was a cowboy coffee man for years until I got one of those press things. Works great.
nwhunter
Percolated coffee for us, part of the tradition of hunting/camping. I have heard nothing about good things about the press coffee especially if someone else is boiling water for hot chocolate...
reinhard1
hard to break the cowboy habit after doing it as long as i can remember. outdoors, and a coffee pot percolating is part of the magic of the day for me. good luck.
Comit 2
I just got a brunton flip n’ drip a few weeks ago and have been using it for my work coffee and I’ve been quite happy with it. In the field I will stay with my Snow Peak Titanium Trek 700 Mug (Snow Peak Starter Kit) and a Jet Boil press. Burner, fuel, press and cup in one small package. sunniewally
they sure sound like the real deal, do you get alot of coffee grounds comming thru the filter? i use a single cup press, but you do get alot of residue with mine.
Comit 2
With the flip & drip I get no ground coming through. If you grind the coffee to fine it will take a long time to brew. With the jet boil press I do get a little but there is no rule saying I have to drink that last 1/64 oz.

woodsmanmn
When I use my perculator, I get the water boiling first, then put in the stand and basket and finish it up on just enough heat to get it to perculate. mmm mmm
BartmanMN
I just put some coffee grounds in my lip like a dip and sip on hot water. Works like a charm.J/K
