Which rod holders would you recomend? I would like to buy a couple and would like the one that has the option of having the extention on it. I saw the scotty brand ones are they pretty good product? In other words worth paying more for? Thanks

I use Scotty's in my boat and they are a quality product. I have rails in the rear so I use the rail mounts in that location, but in the bow I installed the regular mounts on the inside of the gunnel and use the extension rods. Work great. I'll be out in the boat tomorrow and I'll take some pics if you're interested.

My boat is fiberglass and the top of the gunnel is too narrow for a flush mount application so I didn't have much choice in how to mount them in the bow but the Scotty's worked perfect with the side mount and extension. All my buddies with fiberglass boats have used Scotty's for years and they like them as well.

I think the Scotty brand is a bit better than most. That is what I went with on my new boat. The Attwood brand isn't bad, but there are a couple different locking mechanisms on the Attwood's (the clamp that you slide over your rod to hold it in place) and one of those is definitely better than the other. Not quite sure how to describe them, but as you are looking at the rod holders, look for that difference and you will see it.

I liked the Cabela's (QuikDraw) Scotty's on my previous boat, but I really like the Folbe's I've got now. Rail mounted, extensions available. Flush mounts, side mounts also available.

Very easy in and out of holder (no flip over clamp) and rod will not / can not come out until you want it out. EXTREMELY durable and fool-proof. That's coming from a "fool." check em out.

good luck....

I like the Rams, spendy but work well for me needs.

That is what I have in my boat. I needed to have a way to adjust the location and height of my rods when I am trolling on Lake Superior with my planers boards. They are built great and super easy to adjust.

Same recommendation from me.

RAM makes the most versatile systems in my opinion, for most freshwater fishing applications. Pin style and stanchion and ball mounts, both excellent systems. The options open for use with the RAM ball systems are nearly endless. Camera, GPS, even a laptop adapter...lots of options here.

The RAM Classic 2000 is a great model and cost effective. There is a ball to pin adapter now so you do have some new flexibility there that was previous lacking. Great starter rigs.

For Heavy Duty rod holders DriftMaster is tops. DriftMaster also offers a very nifty T-Bar system for setting up a spread in the rear/front of a boat at a good height for lead trolling. This system is a quick install and removal system, great for boats were you do not wish to drill...drill...drill a bunch of holes to mount rod holders. The DriftMaster Spider Rig T-Bar is a very handy system on any rig.

t-250-h.JPGlilduo2.gif My favorite for versatility in the DriftMaster line is this Duo model, two angle settings.

They cover 98% of what you will will ever need...plus you still have angular tilt adjustments on the T-Bar to fine tune the rod spread.

These are very tough rod holders, and will last a lifetime. Favorites among the Big Kitty hunting crews. I have ran these for years, they will outlive me.

The Rams work better with spinning rods.

I just realized that this weekend that is really slick how they work for a spinning set-up. I have Scottys in the bigger style for my cat Rods/reels but may grab some Rams for the spinners. Wish they had the same mount as the Scottys.

Also I prefer the ALL plastic extensions over the more expensive plastic, stainless/steel extensions in the Scotty line. I like the one piece of the plastic versus the clunky 2 or 3 piece that the stainless/plasic ones come in.

even with the extentions and Kings burning line, I haven't had a problem with my scotty's.

I lost one over the side picking the rod up one time and relized I had the base mounted the wrong way. These are the quickdraw style ones.

They come off nicely for travel and mount on the rails so they can be moved.

I use the Down East brands. They are metal, strong enough for pulling anything, they have a smaller profile(no more hitting rod holders on docks), and when you catch a fish, all you have to do is lift straight up out of the holder.

Drawback is they are pricey

I have Scotty's, but need to look into those RAM mounts. Those are sweet! I need something in the back of the boat and the Scotty mount doesn't fit back there. Thanks for posting the pics!
