Favorite colored crank bait?

+2 - This is the most effective Rattlin Rap I own. I've got several of them in each size.

Other than that, the same in black works well as does Firetiger and Perch. Iv'e had crayfish patterns work well on smallies, but not so much with the walleyes.

Crankbait color is very situational for me.

Daytime

Clear water - perch

Dirty water - Firetiger

Nighttime

Dark night(no moon, heavy cloud cover) - Florescent Orange or crawfish

Bright night(full moon, lots of ambient light) Clown

If you made me use just one it would be perch.

Blue back, silver sides.

+3 I think....

My fav has always been the "Silver blue" from Rapala that they quit carrying for the most part. For just about ever species, but especially walleyes & pike seem to love that color.

So for all you guys using "cranks" I have been strictly a bobber fisherman for 'eyes but will be heading up to Kabetogama next week and want to try this out. I probably will sound like an [PoorWordUsage] now but I can take it. What of the 50+ different lures rapala makes is a "crank"? From what I have read the last few days a #5 will be what I want to pick up? Any other advice for a newbie is appreciated, thanks! Once I find out what the exact name is I think I will pick up 2-3 fire tiger, blue back silver sides and maybe one other design.

I've always called any hard, plastic bait a crankbait. Some have a lip up front, some tie to a ring farther back from the nose of the bait. Maybe my usage isn't right, but it's gotten me this far. grin

Those northern, rocky lakes make me love my jigs. They're real cheap to lose...

Have a great trip, I'll be up there over the weekend after opener.

Crank is just short for Crankbait. A wood or hard plastic lure usually with a lip/bill but in some cases they do not have a "lip" and those are called lipless (crazy huh?) or other times referred to as rattle baits. To get to your question pretty much any lure that comes in a small box that says 'rapala' would be considered a crank.

The Shad Rap is a great walleye lure but they are made of balsa and the smaller versions dont cast all that great. Id pick up the larger sizes 7 and 9s if you intend to cast or maybe pick up some of the plastic 'glass shad rap' versions, they will be heavier as cast better. The original rap would be a good one to grab, too. Ill also add that any of the rapala baits will catch walleyes.

They do make glow raps. I've used them with some success.

As far as the clack n rap goes, I've got one but can't justify spending $10 on something that doesn't seem to work as well as the Rattlin Rap which I can get for $3.50.
