How close is too close

We have a small group of fish houses set up together an a busy lake. We are all friends. We are set up on the break of a big piece of structure. The problem is that guys in portables set up so close to our houses that we can't even park our trucks near them. I know the law is 10 feet. Last night there were no less than 10 portables mixed in between our houses which are set about 30 feet apart. The funny thing is the are not even on the break.

Tell them your house gets power from your truck battery and pull up close to them. I mainly fish in a portable but when i get to the lake if someone is there already i pick a different spot. I like fish that are not getting picked through already.

The DNR should increase the minimun distance. This issue has always ruffled my feathers. Like posted earlier its fine when its our friends but to have somone post up 30 feet from you on a lake is B.S.

I'm pretty easy going too but leaving no driveway room to a perm is just ridiculous. Now 20-30ft isn't a prob to me at all, you will hear others talking no matter what, it's quiet out on lakes, no traffic... just talking and augers. Of course a hotspot is going to attract attention, can't do anything about it as others are there for the same reason you are there.. guess all you can do is try to get out there as soon as you can when you do go.. Sounds good..but.......If you increase the minimum distance too much you could be allowing people to take over a spot for themselves. Like a small reef or a good panfish hole. Just set out your main house and build some cheap 4x4 house to put around it so people can not get anywhere near your main house. As long as you are willing to buy the extra licenses. Example: with a 30ft minimum and some "satelite" house you could keep everyone 90ft away.

I think that's partially why this is an un-enforceable law. My buddies and I set up back to back, so are we illegal then cause we are within 10 feet of each other even though we are fishing together and do it so we can talk, [PoorWordUsage] and hand bevys and bait through the windows but technically illegal right?

I tend to set up 25+ feet from others, I just don't like being that close to others not sure why others like to be? Doesn't make sense to me as to what any advantage would be of more people fishing the same smaller area? Maybe this is why I'm not that good of a fisherman. I do know that around me on the lakes the perms are set up an consolidated in areas but many of these belong to people that are local and many enjoy the "shanty" town atmosphere to catch fish and hang out so I guess there is another side to being set up close to each other.

If there is someone on the spot I want to fish I will ask if they mind me setting up close. If they say they don't want me there I do it anyways. Just kidding. Most people don't mind unless you are setting up at primetime and scare the fish away with alot of noise.

I guess I am like some of the others being that I like my space out on the lake. While I won't raise a stink as long as its a legal distance I tend to pack up and move if it gets a little too busy where I am at. Usually the places I fish turn off when there is a lot of traffic or noise so getting close together doesn't help the fishing. There is plenty of water out there that we don't need to be packed together like sardines in a can.

The pic of those two portables so close together is pretty bad, that would make me a little hot. I would make sure to have one wild party the second they got there grin It would be epic...A band(maybe GWAR), a wrestling ring complete with mexican wrestlers, the bikini ice team, a petting zoo, you know, the usual.

are you saying that once you set up your permy that nobody should ever be able to fish that area whether or not you are in the permy? maybe I'm misunderstanding you but it sounds like if they were there before you pulled up in your pickup then you weren't fishing that spot when they arrived. does having your permy parked there give you squatters rights for that spot the whole winter whether or not you are fishing?

.... does having your permy parked there give you squatters rights for that spot the whole winter whether or not you are fishing? ...

Acording to the way the law is written, yes. For ease of numbers, if you have a fishouse that is lets say 8x12, fairly standard size permy in MN. That means you and you alone get a spot on the lake that is 28'x32'. Starts to be a big spot eh? Now just think if you have a 10x20 wheel house. Now you get a spot 30'x40'.

Prime spot on a small reef, yours.

Sunken Island, yours.

The more we learn about fishing in the winter, the more I think the days of hauling your fishouse and planting it on a spot should go the way of the dino.

I guess I never thought of it like that but you are right. I my self would like to see perms and wheelhouses go away but I know that won't ever happen. People get to uptight if someone comes by them and fishes. if they are more then 10 feet from you, you don't have nothing to be mad about you don't own the lake. remember lakes are public places

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
