Scary Stuff

Recommended Posts

I don't normally read the Star Tribune, but a friend of mine sent this article to me. Jesse is a former student of mine, a student you never forget and one you want to run into in 15 years and see where they are in life. He was and is one of those kids that never leaves your mind.

Jesse Gess Story

I know we are well past the deer hunting season, but this is a scary reminder to remember our gun safety training and to always know where your muzzle is pointed.

Who cleans a gun with a bullet in the chamber??? A very foolish person. Thankfully the kid is O.K.!

UMMMM, did you read the article.

I know we all practice Muzzle control etc... but read the story, it went through the bed of the truck, through the cab and through the seat. I guess I wouldn't have thought the slug would be able to go through all that. I, like the father, would have been wrong. Terrible story, but at least the kid was OK.

Does that make a difference??? Have you taken gun safety.... Even if you are outside a truck why would you clean a gun with a bullet in the chamber??? He could have blown up his truck and killed both of them. Terrible story-I hope the kid still wants to hunt.

Wow, so glad he made it through it.

Glad he had enough strength to make it to the hospital and Thankful for the surgeon on hand!

As a Dad I could not imagine the thoughts going through his head after he shot his son.

Never Ever want to experience anything even remotely close to that!

Dude, READ the ARTICLE, the guy was NOT cleaning his gun. Where in the world do you come up with that? Careless though none the less, always, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, loaded or not, loading or un-loading.

The version of this articel I read in a different newspaper said cleaning. But what is the difference?? Weather you are cleaning or loading, should it be pointed at your truck with your kid inside? Sad story, hopefully some people will learn from his mistake.

The difference is it was a complete accident, its not like they were standing in a field and he was openly pointing the muzzle at his kid while he loaded it.

Yes, I had gun safety, Yes, I know how to handle a gun properly, but there was half a vehicle between he and his kid, he probably couldn't even see him. Does it change anything? Unfortunately, No. I'm betting that a large # of us have loaded a weapon while it was facing a vehicle or even an outbuilding. Admit to it or not.

Thank God his is ok. Sounds like a complete accident but gun safety is key. I haven't slug hunted in years but for the few years I did, I never loaded my gun until I was up in my stand. And I unloaded before I climbed down. I actually missed an opportunity after I had climbed down as a result one year but I still would rather have unloaded just to be safe. I'm not saying I'm safer or smarter, just saying you can never be too safe when handling a firearm. Again, just glad he's ok.

"Doug said he had loaded his gun the same way he had for years. He opened the hard plastic case, placed a shell in the open chamber and closed it. That's when the gun went off."

This sounds like an illegal act. The way I read it, he opened the hard gun case while it was sitting in the back of the truck and loaded the gun as it was sitting in the case.

That was a dumb-%^& move anyway you look at it.

The surgeon who saved the young man's life deserves a tremendous amount of credit. He's a true master of his profession.

Arctic,

the way I read it he was laoding the gun in the back of the truck by the tailgate, but the muzzle was pointing towards the cab of the truck. The gun discharged and went through the bed, through the cab, through the seat, and hit the boy, who was sitting in the front seat of the cab. Nothing illegal about it, albeit not the safest.

This might be another one of those cases where the reporter writing the story is clueless about guns. I don't know.

When I see "plastic case" I'm thinking hard gun case. Having a loaded gun is a case in a vehicle is illegal. Loading the gun while it is in the case in the vehicle is also technically illegal.

Obviously, this was an accident, and I'm thankful the man didn't lose his son.

Yeah, I hear what you are saying. Lots of half truths and rumors about this topic. Depending on what story you read. One story he's cleaning his gun, another story he's in the cab. The one I read stated that the bullet went through the box, the cab, and the seat. I would assume that meant he was back by the tail gate loading his gun when it went off. In this case, I feel bad for the guy, it wasn't the most careful, but seriously, there was two pieces of steel between he and his son. He probably couldn't even see him. It wasn't a great case of muzzle control, but in this instance, I feel it was truly a tragic accident.
