McGurk
I'm a sucker for the garlic fries and a batch of curds. We also get a bucket of cookies and head over to the milk booth at the end of the day. Makes for a sleepy bus ride home! I don't buy into all of the new stuff, but have tried the fried oreos and chocolate bacon in years past; neither of which were worth it. bobbymalone
my sister travels 700 miles every year to stuff her face with one of those fudgepuppies - chocolate dipped belgium waffle with whipped cream on top. on a stick of course.i make a sport of eating the worst/strangest things i can find and although many were not "good" all were far better than i imagined. peanut butter - banana - bacon hotdogs come to mind. so does hot dish on a stick with cream of mushroom dipping sauce and spaghetti and meatballs on a stick. CJH
I like the basics, just like Pier. Pronto Pup, Sweet Martha's Cookies, Mini Donuts, and the fresh corn on the cob.I'll add a crazy thing or two, but have the basics for sure every time I go!! magic_minnow
Tried the alligator sausauge...have to say wasnt bad....tastes like a potato polish kielbasa or something. And of course...sweet marthas cookies, stuffed my face full of em! And my astonishing find of the yaer was the walleye cakes that was featured in the coupon book. They were surprisingly delicious, came with a custom spiced honey mustard sauce. It was real good. I did find that it did contain some salmon. CRAZYEYES
I worked there one year at a lemonade stand. Came home sick every night. Cheese curds and pronto pups for me. Loved the real porky's pork chops when they still had them, now its just a pork chop on a stick.
MuleShack
I forgot to add Pronto Puff and no that's not a Corn Dog folks! So here's the "Good Question" of the day...What is the difference between a Pronto Puff and a corn dog? Oh and by the way, cant go to the fair with out gorging on a big ol' cob o corn. Dark Cloud
I was at a local county fair a week ago and tried the deep fried oreos. My girlfriend and I split 4 of em and both really liked them. The batter was nice and the inside got all warm and mushy. Tasty but two was enough...
McGurk
The menu was:-Andouille sausage w/ onions and kraut from Sausage by Cynthia (def. worth a look!)-$2 big cup of Lemonade-Ft long Corn dog (not a pronto pup!)-cheese curds from the Mouse Hole-Roasted Corn-bucket of Sweet Martha's cookies ($15 this year, ridiculous in this "recession"!)-3 trips through the milk stand (see above!)-a scotch egg (1/2 of which got covered by pulverized [PoorWordUsage] thanks to a gust of wind by the barns, and thrown away)I didn't see anything new this year I couldn't do without. Of all of that the Sausage by Cynthia stand was the best. Give it a try if you like some spice and heat!
DTro
I didn't know you could get a Pronto Puff at the fair Where is this stand? -Fresh bucket of fries drenched with salt and vinegar -Hot Corn on the Cob ooozing in butter -Greasy Salty Cheese Curds -Finished off by a bucket of moist semi melted Sweet Marthas oh man does it get any better? fishinchicks
Corn Dog has a corn meal based batterProno Pup has a flour based batterDue to circumstances which still irritate the heck out of me, we didn't stop and try out as many places as we would have liked. We settled for a prono pup and Sweet Martha's Cookies.
FlagsDown
A corn dog is sweeter, too.I prefer the Pronto Pup, myself.
PierBridge
A corn dog is sweeter, too.I prefer the Pronto Pup, myself. Correct the Corn-dog has sugar added to attract the younger generation "kids" and the Original Pronto puff is just old school delicious! bassfshin24
the turkey leg was amazing! last year had nachoe on a stick which was surprisingly very good!
bobbymalone
-bucket of Sweet Martha's cookies ($15 this year, ridiculous in this "recession"!)$15?!?! That's ridiculous at anytime.I've always felt that Sweet Martha's is the most overrated and biggest rip-off food item at the fair. Get a packet of toll house choc chips, follow the directions on the back of the package, and eat them minutes after they come out of the oven. You can enjoy sweet martha's cookies year round for about a tenth of the cost.
McGurk
Tell me about it, bobby; I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm no strager to making a batch once in a while myself, but there isn't a tollhouse bucket that you get to keep! We go to the fair with this in mind once a year, and as you can see from the list, I'm glad it's only once a year.
DTro
Yep, we can also grill our own corn, make our own fries, and get proto pups in the freezer section at Cub.But where else can get ankle bit by strollers, buy a chamois that you will never use, and realize the there might be a few more rednecks in MN that you would have imagined, all while enjoying a tasty treat? PierBridge
Let's not forget all the hot chicks you get to look while dunking those 15 dollar cookies in your milk all for less than the price of one lap dance at the KOD "King of Diamonds".....
harvey lee
I will buy about anything but not $15 for a bucket of $5 cookies.
bobbymalone
Yep, we can also grill our own corn, make our own fries, and get proto pups in the freezer section at Cub. But where else can get ankle bit by strollers, buy a chamois that you will never use, and realize the there might be a few more rednecks in MN that you would have imagined, all while enjoying a tasty treat? I'll gladly pay for some expensive food that I rarely eat anywhere but the fair, either because I can't reproduce it home or I just don't want to deal with it at home. And, just like a hot dog at a twins game or something, food is all part of the whole experience that is the fair. But, I dunno. Maybe I eat a lot of cookies at home and buy a tube of dough for $3.27 so I am just not that excited about a bucket of $15 cookies at the fair. I am confused about the fervent praise and general craziness regarding SM cookies. When I first moved here 7 something years ago, everybody was telling me that i "HAD" to stop by SM's during my fair visit... Thoroughly unimpressed. I guess I am just sad that so many people have never had fresh baked chocolate chip cookies before that they will line up around the block to drop $15 on them. Maybe I'm sad I didn't think of doing it first . I prefer the crazy stuff that I can't get anywhere else. $7 for a bit of loon meat on a stick. Sure, why not? Deep fried this or that? Yep, where's the line? I heard someone is selling camel on a stick. Anybody try it yet? I will definitely give a report after I go to the fair.
