The appeal for me is the hunt itself. The reward is finding and eating the mushroom. They are a very tasty mushroom as well, which makes it very popular. They can only be found for a short time in the spring.

These mushrooms belong to the Morchella genus and do not have any psychedelic effects and are legal to possess. Psilocybin mushrooms would be the "magic mushrooms" that get you high and are illegal to possess. Two completely different fungi.

For me it gives me a reason to go walk the dog and get outside. Leech, I guess I stated that wrong. Old timer used this trick to grow morels larger, not transplant them. He claims that if you try this that most morels will double or triple in size and sometimes they will completely fill the glass jar.

I'm probably going to head out and see if I can find some on my property. It'll be the first time since I was just a boy I have walked my property for morels, so I'm not expecting great success, but I'm hoping to find a few at least! Best of luck to the rest of you shroomers!!

I have hunted these for a few years now and have never hit the motherlode, but have found enough for a few nice meals on top of a venison tenderloin. I found some last night though that have me wondering. they are not typical of the ones Ihave found before. they have a tall stem but just a small sponged head. I have a picture of one, but don't know how to post it. Anyone iterested in loking at it?

Disregard. I found pics of them on the net. They are called Half Free Morels! I found a spot holding about 50 of them last night. I didn't harvest any because I wasn't sure. Now I just have to double check inside to make sure they are indeed hollow.

Yep the saying is "if it's hollow you can swallow" wink

Well....they do taste good, but to me it is more like treasure hunting. Some people are Agate hunters and some prefer to wander sandy beaches with a metal detector. others like me prefer to hunt mushrooms. I can't explain it, but I had the same view you do now about 5 years ago. Now I am hooked! Also...my cream of pheasant wild rice morel mushroom soup has become a great delicacy throughout my family members. I would let them down if I didn't come through every spring with a batch of it!

I like mushrooms but i am having a hard time figuring out what the appeal of this is?

do these get you high? or taste out of this world?

Help me understand what the big deal is......

the wife, daughter and I hunt together and give a few to my parents, but the majority of them go on the popular auction site. you can to and above$20 per lb. its fun for us to get out as a family to hunt them and we have made a couple hundred bucks over the last couple years doing something we enjoy.

bgreen82, holy smokes I find enough to be happy and make a few meals but not pounds to sell to others. So, um where is that you find them? smirk

I hit 5 of the spots I normally pick morels and looked for 7 hours today without one morel.

I could not believe it.

In regards to the white morels, they could be greys or yellows that are old and started to get the white mold on them. I would not eat any morels with white mold.

I have never seen one before but have heard of ppl looking for them. I took the dog out in the woods the other day and spent about an hour and a half looking. Nothing ! No mushroom of any kind. It was a mature woods with lots of deadfalls laying everywhere. I live in the Wyoming area and it is DRY ! Too dry ? Am I in the wrong kind of woods ? Just looking to find 1 and try it to see what all the fuss is about. I remember smelling a jar of dried ones and they smelled good. Any tips ? Thanks in advance !

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
