What a beast bro, good shizzal. that was a very fun outing, we'll have to do that more often next season

With out a doubt.

I'm about 90% sure i'm going to skip the croix this weekend and fish some nights around here; but i want to put more time on the croix and miss next summer for flats!!! Maybe you can guide me an outing on the miss.

Here's a doggie I caught when I was out fishing the backwaters with a friend of mine (he didn't catch any doggies, unfortunately). I call him the Eager Beaver, 'cause every time I go to that honeyhole, I always seem to end up catching him! He's 19 inches, and boy did he smile for the camera! Major thanks goes to my bud for taking the picture!

here's a handy little card to help you id redhorse..

It's tough to tell if that tail is more red.. or if its more black.. part of me thinks it's a greater

edit: upon further inspection.. im almost positive its a greater.. the fin on a golden is concave.. while that fin is clearly rounded

That's the card I use for my quick ID's as well.

That's no greater though... I'm almost positive it's a silver.

Tail isn't red, and the count of scales around the base of the tail are closer to 12 than 16 smile Convex dorsal with 15ish rays.

Red tails are pretty red indeed

Update on fish #2 in my previous post: currently residing in a DNR freezer waiting positive id from fisheries biologists. smile The two who looked at it earlier today seemed pretty sure it is a river carpsucker, but they're going to pass it on for a second opinion Monday.

It's been a fun week on the river with the fly rod. Some of these pics are recycled from my species thread/TR down in the 'fly shack,' so apologies if y’all have seen some of these already.

Also recycled from the fly section. I was quite surprised to see what this one was. Fun fight too... Quillback Carpsucker

I lost a pretty big carp last night too as I was trying to get the line on the reel... not the first time that's happened this week either. Oh well.

A snapshot of some of my favorite rough fish fly patterns.... if anyone is curious smile

finally got back in the roughfish game today. went out to check out a spot. didnt look too promising. but then i looked down at my feet and withing an inch of the bank, i saw the head of a nice female bowfin. needless to say i quickly ran to the car, tied on a bare hook and slapped on a crappie minnow and dropped it in her face. the result ended up being my first bowfin in nearly 2 long years, and a pretty nice one at that!

also came across a few of these in a small creek. resulting in a new lifelist addition. thought they were extremely large shiners at first.

kinda weird seeing them so shallow....

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
