Gulp Alive!!

Recommended Posts

Used the new minnow heads side by side with real heads and caught just as many fish if not more this winter. So i imagine the summer stuff will work well also. I would take some live bait with the first few trips and fish them side by side and if your satisfied with the results you know to make the switch! I'm defintly going to give it a shot!! More time fishing and less time rebaiting = more fish in the box = more fish in the freezer.

Been going to Lac Seul for the past 10 years. On a typical day, we boat upwards of 100-150 walleyes per person so I thought it would be a great place to test and compare Gulp! Alive against minnows. I bought some that mimicked fatheads as best I could in about the same size range we use. My experiment didn't fare well for the Gulp! imitations. I caught a few fish but the minnows definitely out-produced the Gulp!

One thing someone told me was that you have to fish the Gulp! more aggressively than live bait so I tried varying my presentation quite a bit to see if that would help but it didn't seem to make much difference in my results.

When you guys are using the Gulp minnows with a standard style jig head, are you hooking them like you would a real minnow through the head (through the tip of the Gulp minnow)or do you thread the Gulp minnow up the shank and snug it up to the jig head itself?

Thanks

There are situations in which gulp works. Last summer when I was on a slip bobber-leech bite I switched to gulp and did quite well. I have also trolled the worms and leeches with some sucess as well. I still have live bait in the boat at all times, but usually only one kind rather than three. It allows me to have other types of bait just in case that's what the fish are preferring. That said, the fish have to be biting!

I hate them! They didn't catch fish on LOTW and the oil caused a bunch of the paint on the motor to come off on my hand. It was really weird. I keep one pack in my box in case of an emergency (hot bite), but will never be my go to bait. I perfer the Lindy Munchie grub, which has put much more big fish in the boat for me.

Gulp crawlers take the action out of the slow death hook. Try a shakey head worm designed for bass. You will get alot more action. Gulp crawlers work best on a 3 hook spinner rig.

Did you make sure the pinch the Gulp worm so that there was only about 3/4 of an inch of worm after the bend in the hook. Leaving the entire worm on a slow death will take away it's action.

I have used Gulp Alive minnows on URL during the first month of the walleye season with good results. The Gulp are much more durable than real minnows and last for 10+ fish rather than having to rebait with live minnows each fish caught. Now the disclaimer.............. When we were usig Gulp on URL I think ANYTHING would work to catch fish. I have not used Gulp during an average or slightly tough bite. I have heard that when the bite turns tough you are MUCH better with live bait.

I tried the gulp crawlers last year on kabetogama and Namakan lakes and not a bite. I was fishing for walleye and they were hitting regular crawlers but they wouldn't take the gulp. I'll try them again this year because I have them but I won't buy anymore.

I've had good luck with the Gulp! smelt and shad patterns for panfish and bass. Again less hassle vs. dealing with live bait, especially when you live on a lake, you can get home, change clothes, hop on the boat and go fishing in less than 10 minutes. Don't have to worry about keeping minnows alive. But don't leave the live bait home during a tough bite. Doesn't hurt to be versatile.

Two years ago I used the Gulp Alive minnows on Leech the weekend after opener. I did just as well with the Gulp as with real shiners, and seemed to catch bigger fish with the Gulp. A year ago on opener I decided to be stubborn and stick to Gulp, thinking that by the end of the trip things would average out and I would do just as good as the guys in the boat using real minnows, but it was not the case. I got outfished pretty badly which usually doesn't happen. The last day I finally gave in and switched to the real thing and did much better.

I think it all depends on the mood of the fish. Active fish + gulp = success. Inactive fish + gulp = burgers for supper. Thats my experience. If the weather this spring continues to be warm and we have a nice chop on our annual trip to Leech the week after opener, I'm expecting to do well with Gulp snap-jigging aggressively. If weather is less than ideal, I'm expecting to end up using the real thing. I will have both in the boat, that is for certain.
