I receive a magazine similar to in fisherman every couple of months. I have gotten 3 of the aforementioned "cheap" knives which work fine as long as you keep them sharpened. 1 spool of some 12 lb trilene xt, rattle rap, hats, belt buckle, plastics case, lots of advertisement, 7' rod sheath and the opportunity to purchase a few of the General Tactic Knowledge books. In my mind it has equaled out monetarily as if i went and purchased this stuff in the store.

I have been a Life Member for mor than 20 years now. So far I'm still waiting for my first "field test" item. I did the other day get an invite to become a "Trophy Live Member". This of course would require me to send in more $$. I don't think I will.

I'm a memeber, but just for this year because I want a copy of an article I'm in this fall.

I will say one thing though, if you join, pay by money order. I was a member for a few years back in my late teens and early twenties and they seemed to think your credit card number was a free for all. They'd send you a book etc. and then charge you.

I never received a test product either.

I was a member and was mailed offers to try some things but if I recall correctly, I was being given the choice to field test, then purchase at a reduced price for the better products other than the sacrificial knives.

I'm not a member to either the fishing or hunting club anymore.

My guess is if you buy in whole heartedly and are active with the application process then you get "the good stuff" for the cost of an evaluation.

I tried it, sent in my money and testing application. All I ever got was a keychain, and books I either had to pay to keep, or pay to ship back before they charged me. I NEVER got anything to test (which was the big reason I joined). In the end, it cost me my membership fee, and about 5 times that in books. Needless to say, I never rejoined.

I really wish I could've talked to someone to find out why I never did get to test anything.

I've been a Life Member probably 8-9 years. I needed a new leather jacket & thought the jacket at the time was probably worth close to the cost & then get the magazine forever. I've tested a couple of things, but I had to send it back or buy it. I didn't have to pay to return it. I bought a couple of books & then just refused them after that.

I joined a few years ago and really thought the magazine was very good. I tested a couple of products, turkey jerkey seasonings, and a couple of other items. I forgot about sending in the rating form the last time and quite getting products to test after that. Never was asked to pay for any items, but then they may have changed the policy.

Well fellas, I thought we had taken care of this subject way back when. It is nothing more than a marketing agency. You are never going to come out ahead...unless you enjoy getting junk products and a steady volume of junk mail. And keep in mind: last time I looked you CANNOT be compelled to pay for something you receive UNSOLICITED in the mail-Congress took care of that years ago. If you get a book you did not ask for do NOT pay for it.I think, but am not positive, that they are getting away with it by claiming you are a member and therefore there is an IMPLIED agreement on your part to accept and PAY for [PoorWordUsage] you do not need. I know a couple guys who just tossed the [PoorWordUsage] and after a while it stopped and they never heard from NAHC again.

I am frankly amazed they have been able to get away with this as long as they have.

Of course, Congress outlawed LOUD ANNOYING commercials years ago too.....but I notice that hasn't changed either.

My reccomendation: save your time and your money.

If I understand this correctly, you have to sign up for it. Therfore, they can send you stuff and make you pay for it. Because you signed up for it, it's not unsolicited.

I totally agree with Ufatz' rec though- you'd be better off not bothering... at least I would!

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
