Not What I Expected

To come up my hole today! It's been a goal of mine to catch one through the ice the last couple of years. But the place I was fishing in today was a very unlikely spot for it to happen. Fishing for pannies and I get a light bite, I set the hook and nothing happened. I tugged on the line with my hands to feel it give way. Start having line peeling off my reel and about 5 minutes later the fish is up the hole. Using an Ultralite pole with 4 LB line and a gill pill with a waxy. The cheep HT combo held up well, something I really hope happens againg, it was crazy fun.

About 5 LBS

Can anyone tell me why all my fish look small when I hold them up.

funny how that happens-last weekend we were out fishing walleye and with 2 eaters on the ice i marked a nice fish about halfway up the water column in 20 FOW. i was thinking maybe a crappie or pike if not another waldo. turns out it was about a 2# sucker-hit a small frostee-like jig and waxie.

I used to fish for them when I was a little kid, because it was convenient and they were stupid-easy to catch. But - why would you ever, as a sane adult, want to catch these on purpose? :P

Congrats on the fun ice catch - that's gotta be one of the good "what the...?" moments. =)

Sometimes it's more fun to catch something that will double your rod over than reeling in an old wet sock that will eventually end up in your frying pan grin

As someone who enjoys fishing for carp (although questionably sane), they are not always stupid-easy to catch, especially the biggun's. They spook incredibly easy and can be tricky to get a hook into. As with other species, certain times of the year they can be much easier to catch than others.

People have varying opinions on why they target carp but I think everyone who fishes for them shares the commonality of hearing the drag screaming "mercy" as a carp goes on a big run. Pound for pound, carp can brawl.

Getting back on topic, great catch LPCrow! I've always wanted to get one through the ice. Congrats!

I agree -- that's why I fished them when I was a kid (but I will argue that they're pretty easy to catch - I just went with a bobber, a hook, and a can of corn and always caught them).

My son (age 9) had a "rod doubled over moment" this weekend when we went ice-fishing in my portable. Something light hit my line (crappie) and as I was lazily reeling it in, something big hit his. Doubled his rod over, and he couldn't reel it in.

Turns out, my hooked crappie crossed his line and our lines got hooked together right at the hook. It was total Laurel and Hardy as I'd pull on mine, his would go down and visa-versa.

see, thats where you go wrong.. You are assuming that I am Sane.. LOL

They battle.. I dont eat a ton of fish.. and if I am going to eat fish, it will be crappie or gills.. I can catch them whenever.. But if I could get on a school of carp and light line ice fish them.. It would be awesome!!!
