then i use a Hi-Lift jack to pop it up and slide some blocks under it. the Hi-Lift is best if ya have one because it doesn't require a lot of area to be chiseled out for it to fit down there. They are only $60 at Fleet Farm so it's a great investment and time saver if you have a skid house.

Some other names for the Hi-Lift:

-HANDYMAN

-WIDOW MAKER(my favorite)

The ice thing would be really good. I forgot:( I use the large watersoftener pellets, thawed out my rain gutters and down spout. It took 2 days but the water flowes like summer.

Come on Jim, you're a guide and should know better. This is a very bad idea. Putting salt pellets into the lake for any reason is wrong and probably illegal. I was trying to think of a nice way to say it, but couldn't come up with one. Simply a wrong thing to do.

Really its a couple blocks I am pretty sure it will be ok.

They use cement for boat landings.

Wrong. It's not OK.

Wasn't there a post on here yesterday about the DNR asking icefishermen not to litter? That's part of what they're talking about.

If you bring it out on the ice with you, take it back off of the ice with you.

Wrong. It's not OK.

Seems like they would provide structure for fish to hide out and may even increase the population. I've heard of DNR sinking old boats and whatnot to provide habitat. Whats so bad about artificial rocks? Come back and fish the same spot the next year. In a flat sandy area, where the fish gonna be at? Probably hovering around the concrete blocks, lol. smile

Well here is a solution for those of you that don't want to pick up your blocking that shouldn't upset anyone. Block ice, its cheap and strong. If you dont want to buy it you can use ice cream buckets and make as much blocking as you want. Use 4-8 blocks depending on the size of your house. I've never tried it because I just thought of it reading this post. I think it would work well as long as it doesn't get so warm it melts the blocks, and if you banked your house a little I think it would take a long time for them to melt.

I use multiple small blocks of dimensional lumber.

Worst case, the bottom one or two blocks get frozen in, but the rest come right up. Make a mental note and come back in the spring and pick them up. Worst case, a 4" chunk of 2x4 or 2x6 is not going to cause any damage to a boat, where a chunk of 6x6 or railroad tie certainly would.

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire...We dont need no water let the ****** ****** burn....Burn ****** ******, burn.

Then throw a bunch of cement chunks on top of the burn pile.

While you're at it invite the loud "teens on the ice" over with thier radio and make it a party.

So many different viewpoints here to even start with whats right and wrong. I guess go with whats legal and illegal and your gonna be fine. Littering is illegal so if you leave anything behind your in the wrong.

I'm not sure about using salt. If it were that much of a issue the nasty stuff that falls off people's trucks when they drive on the ice would be more of a problem than plain old salt. IMO using salt shouldn't be necessary though. If you can keep that much more junk outa the lake then why not.

Anyway, I vote for chisels, a hi-lift jack, banking it in with the heat turned up and having a few friends to help out. With all that stuff going you got the odds in your favor. Free beer AFTER it has been freed from the ice should help motivate the situation too.

That's up to the DNR to decide, not you or me. It's illegal, for starters - not to mention the quite-obvious result: if one does it, then another, then another, then another - and pretty soon the lake is just a litter pit.

Leaving a cement block behind on the ice is the same thing as witnessing someone heave their cement blocks overboard their boat in the middle of the summer.

Total disrespect for the lake, the law, the DNR and the wildlife.

This statement is totally correct. Why is it so hard to pick up what you took with you? Trash is trash whether it be lumber, foam, or concrete blocks. IMO leaving a few blocks behind is no different than the people that throw bags of trash and beercans in the road ditch. LITTERING IS LITTERING. Learning the difference is what separates sportsmen/sportswomen from filthy slobs who hunt and fish.

Why don't we just throw some old 55 gallon drums and tires in the lake too to make some fish habitat?

Yes, lots of stuff finds its way into our lakes and that's not good, but to go out onto a lake and dump a bunch of salt pellets around an iced in house because someone was too lazy or too stupid to block the thing up in the first place..... Hold it, I guess if someone was too lazy or too stupid to block the house up they would probably think it is okay to dump a bag of salt on the lake.

I'm sorry for not being nicer about this, but dumping salt on the ice is just the wrong thing to do. If I saw anyone doing it I would call the DNR immediately.
