Just had a fish fry and my buddie. He makes fun of me for using ketchup on my fish/cocktail sauce. Am I weird or do people eat fish with ketchup. My buddie made me post this.

Leave that ketchup FAR behind. Ketchup is for people who like the taste of ketchup and don't like the taste of what they're putting it on. smilesmile

I usually eat it with tartar and lemon. But if thats not available, then by all means Ketchup it is

and i am quite a bit older than 12 thank you very much. Nor am I inbred

laugh To each his own. I like ketchup but I wouldn't put it near fish because I wouldn't want to taint the flavor. My guess is that people that put ketchup on fish also put it on their eggs (ick - IMO)

I once had a friend over for a walleye dinner. I had caught a limit of beautiful 16"ers that very morning, filleted them right outa the livewell and prepared them lightly breaded and artfully seasoned.

At dinner, this buffoon got up from my table, walked to my fridge, brought back a bottle of ketchup and blasted a 3" high glob of this hideous red goo smack in the middle of the plate. He then took his fork and cut off a small chunk of this beautiful golden fillet and shoved it to the bottom of the ketchup pile, spun his fork around several times what he shoved in his yap had to be about 3/4 ketchup.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have spent most of my adult life working in jails and prisons, I probably would not have had the restraint to keep from impaling his dinner fork in the back of his neck. Instead, I calmly got up, went to the fridge and grabbed out 3 hot dogs, threw them in the microwave for a minute then walked over to him, dumped the 'dogs on his plate and reposessed what was left of the fish.

I guess you can put me down as a NO!

Funny you bring this up. I was kind of thinkin' folks that use ketchup on everything have either spent alot of time eating institutional food or had a mom that couldn't boil water.

ketchup is an addictive condiment, but i will say when it comes 2 fish, never really felt the need to put ketchup on it myself, maybe a lil butter 4 me, but it depends how ya make it. Everyone has a preference, but if you wanna put ketchup on your fish, more power 2 ya, u keep it, u eat it!

Mix ketchup and miracle whip together, not mayo, only miracle whip and ketchup.... great for dipping fish. So I guess that would count as a yes vote for ketchup.

With that said, fresh fish especially panfish in the winter has to be nothing but fried to perfection and eaten with absolutely NOTHING on it. Leftovers then maybe it's ok. However if it's fried right there isn't a such thing as leftovers now is there??

French fries YES On a Hamburger maybe but on fish NEVER. If your fish taste that bad that you find the need to put Ketchup on them they should have been put in the garbage can and not served or you might want to take a look at a cook book and see what you are doing wrong when it comes to your fish frying abilities.

I wouldn't use ketchup of fish. Once in a while, I will use it on hambergers and that's about it. A bottle can last for almost a year in my fridge. For fish, I like dill dip that you get in the produce section.

Fried fish eaten without a condiment at my home.

Well maybe a squeeze of lemon on fried smelt just before the salt hits them.

If I have some left over fried fish I'll make a sandwich with lettuce, mayo or tater sauce on toast.

I use a finishing sauce that goes over the fish that was broiled, boiled, or grilled. Most times that is a reduction of what the fish was cooked in. Could be honey mustard, B-bq suase, dill butter, garlic butter and so on.

So no ketchup here. I do like canned sardines in Louisiana hot sauce or mustard but they are cooked in it.

I like my Heinz 57 on french fries.

I don't understand why you guys think we are "covering up" the taste of the fish with the ketchup. Its more about adding multiple notes and flavors to food. Or enhancing the flavor if you will I love food with many different flavors in one. If you are so unrefiend that you cannot appreciate that...you may be the 12 year olds. This is coming from a guy trained in culinary arts.

My bride likes lemon on her fish, and my flavor of choice is malt vinagar. Anything else is ABOMINATION!! Of course, my daughter, the doctor(who is single and available) once cooked us some trout in a tangarine sauce that was amazing. Sounds strange but she's a great cook.(And she's unmarried and available).

I dont really see the need for it. Its kind of like steak for me. If its cooked right there is no need for any kind of sauce. It just masks the taste. I could see it being used if its burned or has a bad flavor, but I don't let anyone else cook my fish for me so I never had to try it.

WOW I never realized this would be such a hot button to some. Just to make sure my thought on the subject was correct IN MY MIND I just fried up 4 fresh (Not frozen)walleyes out of MilleLacs to do my test test. Battered in eggs, breaded with shore lunch and fried to a beautiful golden brown. My favorite way by the way.

Gave the wife hers with her mayo on the side and I took mine with ketchup on the side and mayo. I tried it all three ways plain, ketchup and mayo. I admit plain was good, But after eating so much I needed a change so id switch to ketchup for a lil while then go back to the plain. The Mayo, Forget it I hated it. Never did try tarter sauce as I dont like it with anything. Never thought about putting butter on it, Im going to try that next time. I love butter on everything else so why not fish.

Oh, im not 12, not inbred, never been arrested or incarcerated and I dont put it on my eggs either! Forgot to say I dont put steak sauce on a steak either!

I tryed the butter thing on the grill, and did not care for it. if I don't have tarter sauce, I will use miracle whip. and of course salt and pepper, and sometimes a little cajun spices in the batter.

dang, now I am hungry for fish. grin

Absolutly hilarious. Stuck in the house because of a blizzard. Reading your responses was the most fun I have had all day. Looks like my friend can keep making fun of me for using ketchup on my fish. (No ketchup on fish) wins. Thanks to all my ketchup eating brothers out there. My vacation is about over back to school on Monday. Teaching sex education to freshman. MAYBE WE WILL HAVE A SNOW DAY!!!!!!!!!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
