Camera or flasher?

It's hard to say something that hasn't been said already, but get the flasher first! I have a FL-8, and a Cabelas camera. The flasher is a great tool. The camera can be a great tool also, but leans towards a toy more than a tool in many situations. Aside from the flasher being able to see fish in more situations, you can use it to check depth, which is a HUGE factor in locating spots and fish.

LOTS of reasons to get the flasher first - something everyone here seems to agree on.

As far as the brand goes - I'm sure ALL of them out there now are good. I haven't researched it much lately, but my Fl-8 has been going strong for years and years. It's got to be at least 10 years old now. Can't go wrong with Vexilar, and if I was to look at something new, Marcum would get a good look from me too.

This may be one of the only topics in FM forum history where everyone thinks the same thing!!!!!

I purchased my flasher first and use it everytime I fish. I recently got a great deal on an aqua vu scout SRT for $100 so it felt like an affordable camera purchase. The flasher will still go with me everytime but already hauling the camera around, I can say it wont be with on early ice when I have to walk a long distance.

Like everyone sais, the flasher works in every situation, where a camera works in some situations. A camera is fun to use and it is exciting when you see a large northern or walleye, or even a school of perch come into view. I just wanted to use mine to find green vegetation and structure more than for fish watching. A camera takes a while to set up and I have a feeling I wont want to be very mobile with it.

A camera does give you water temperatures where at some times in the year may be beneficial if fish are relating to certain temps, but its more of an ice out early spring method!

One last though for those that do have a camera... A camera can give you a depth estimate in a way. I just wrapped a small piece of tape around the cord at 5' intervals. You could do it at 1 or 2' too I suppose. But it at least gives you an idea of where fish are in the water column or the depth you are in.

I think Harvey Lee summed it up perfectly I just really long winded it! smirk

I scanned next weeks Fleet Farm ad and the Marcum vx-1 is on sale Friday and Saturday for $220. I purchased this unit last year and have really enjoyed it. I would definately go with the flasher first. This has helped my success a lot.

Ok so I have been looking to purchase my own flasher or camera this upcoming season, I am getting sick of borrowing or asking to use someone elses stuff.

I have looked at getting a flasher from vexilar (fl-8), Marcum (VX-1) and hummingbird (ice35) or getting a underwater camera. I have heard good things from all 3 brands of flashers I have looked into mostly getting go for the vexilar but I have also heard that a camera is better because you physically can see the fish sucking the hooks in.

I just want to hear what other more experienced ice fishers have to say and what your recommendations are.

Thank you for your responses in advance

Well I'm 40 I bought a humminbird last spring. My son Billy [8]has been saving his money all year and is dead set on a fish tv set up. He will tell you fish tv is way more better!

We fish the same spot so we are not hole hoppin too much. I guess to answer your question it all depends on what you want to do? I say get both!

does anyone know if it is the old vx-1 or the new vx-1 pro that is on sale?

It is the vx-1, not the vx-1pro, so it has 600W power and does not come with the soft case. I purchased a soft case for my vx-1 last year for around $15.

vx-1 pro has 1000 W power and comes with the soft pack.

without a doubt i would pick the flasher! cant use a camera in the dark, flashers are a lot better for hole hoppin and with a camera if the fish are working different heights of the water colum it will be alot harder to catch fish without a flasher. get the flasher! cameras are very nice and would be a great investment later on but for the first electronic i would get the flasher!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
