Humminbird Ice-55 question?

OK, just received my Humminbird 55 and I'm more than a little concerned that I was sent a lemon. I have a few questions I hope that someone with a 55 can answer for me?

1. When I'm in simulator mode I have to crank the gain up to 28 (in wide angle) and 38 (in narrow angle) in order to see the jig and fish come off the bottom, is that the way everyone Else's works? OK, my main concern on this one is that the book says I should only have gain adjustment of 0-25.

2. During on water testing I would have to turn the gain almost to max just to pick up my jig, even then I could only see it if it was moving. Water depth tested was 40ft and I was having a little trouble keeping the jig straight under the ducer, but it should have easily been inside the cone.

Thanks in advance for the help. Just trying to avoid the warranty issues once the hard water arrives!

That extra cable to suspend the ducer is not the best setup.

Could be that the bottom of the ducer isn't sitting level.

Along with that, being that you tested in open water are you sure your not drifting at all? Could be that jig is on the outside of the cone angle. When you lift the jig its profile changes giving a larger reflective surface. So it could be one of the above or a combination of the above. I wouldn't sweat it till you've used it on the ice and know for sure your jig is directly in the center of the cone angle.

Ya I would get rid of the extra cord that comes with the ducer/float and just use the float. Its just birds way of not stepping on Vex's patent for the ducer float. I know several people who have ran them and they all like them. I will hopefully be running one this winter. Im pumped to use the 6 colors and have the digital depth read out.

I was able to see my jig last year in 30+ feet of water without any problem or having the gain turned up high.

Wait until hardwater. I have a feeling the movement of the boat was an issue. You need a high speed transducer for open water use.

Most people AREN'T having problems picking up their jig in deep water. The only times people have had problems is if their transducer wasn't level. NO flasher will work properly if the transducer isn't level to the bottom.

Thanks for the input. I did not install the support cable, and agree that the jig could have been outside the cone angle during my test. What does everyone think of the gain being adjustable from 0-50? Everything I read, and hear, says it should only go from 0-25. I have a Marcum LX-3 as a backup unit, so I won’t be without if this thing has issue once the hard water arrives.

I had the same problems with the 45 I bought last year. Even after losing the support cable, I still had to almost max out the gain to pick up jigs in less than 12 ft. of water. I tried making sure that the transducer was completely level and I never could make it better. I ended up getting a Marcum VX-1 and have not had a problem with it. It's very possible that I just got a lemon, as it seems that there are many satisfied Humminbird customers.

From what I've heard on initial reviews last year that the transducer uses only one crystal for both wide/narrow beam setting whereas Marcum (not sure about Vexilar) use a different crystal for each angle (2 total) and utilizes its primary signal/frequency to receive strong feedback. Basically Hummingbird is using the secondary signal produced by transducer crystals for their wide angle which is a weaker signal and primary for the narrow beam. I've never used one myself but a few people I know have and they had to operate in narrow beam setting with a fair amount of gain to pick up jigs in only 25-30' of water. They had their 'old' Marcums with and they could easily find their jigs in a side-by-side test. They spent a long weekend giving it a try and playing around with the settings but results were lacking.

Something Hummingbird may want to check into.....

Ok, just got off the phone with Humminbird and was told that they have added some improvements to this years model, one of which is the gain being adjustable from 0-50. No other explanations on why the increase in adjustability, just that it will now be adjustable from 0-50. I guess I will just have to wait for the hardwater to see what I have! Thanks everyone for your input.

Sweet, another spinal tap moment...

Too funny.

I want to put a negative scale on my flasher, so when someone says he was marking his jig and only had turn to his gain up to 1, I can say I was marking my jig and had my gain turned down to -1 laughlaughlaugh

It maybe a lot harder seeing the jig when your boat and the jig is bobbing around more then having it sitting right under it in a ice hole.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
