Would you have any suggestions for a completely "Green (new)" person trying to learn the ropes for trout/salmon fishing.

I am trying to understand where I can fish for salmon/trout : should I focus on Superior or another lake up there??

What should I look for in timing, where might I start? I would love to try for these through the ice.

Trying to learn all the basics about this.

I was thinking about fishing the lake (Superior), offshore if its possible near the river mouths of the knife or french river. It sounds like it is illegal to keep steelhead from the river itself, how about from the lake? It is a long trip from the cities (gas is going so high!) and I want to try and maximize my chances..

there is still time to fish for trout on grindstone. give it a shot as we spoke before about it. rainbows can still be had in the shallows. thats what i would key on for starters. season ends march 31st. for inland stream trout lakes. good luck.

Next time I catch one I'm not going to fillet it the way I did.

Kinda mangled the fillets, but I still got most of the meat off.

I think I'm going to butterfly it like I saw in a few videos.

Got most of the pin bones out of one fillet, but the other one they kept breaking.

rainbows of that size there are two ways i do it. the old fashion way i call it is when you clean the cavity and leave the head and tail on and just salt and pepper. put it through an egg wash and plop it around in flour and fry it in real BUTTER. wait till it getts crispy brown and open it up in the center and pull the whole rib out backbone and all.

the other way [probably still old fashion] is to clean the cavity out, put the bow on its back and cut right down the middle of the spine but not all the way through. butterfly it out. lemon pepper seasoning go on there, plus some thin slices of lemon and brush on some melted butter generously. put it on a baking pan and bake at 350 until the meat falls apart, and is flaky and a hint of brown comes upon the fish. or use your own seasoning. goos luck.

Here are some pictures of a trip i took to the Black Hills last September.

I wanted to do a lot more fishing, but i came out there to help my parents

put a new roof on their camper and that took up more time than i had thought

it would. I did get to fish in Rapid Creek right in Rapid City and the

fishing was great. I even managed to snag a 4+ pounder right on the dorsal

fin.

This is a trout i caught through the ice last winter on Wapatus (Island) Lake in Clearwater county.

I think it's kinda ugly...

This was my largest trout for quite a long time. It's 19 1/2 inches and weighed a little over 3 lbs.

And here is the smallest trout i've ever caught. I tried putting bigger baits on, but i still caught

lots and lots of these one day on Sucker Brook, near Itasca State Park.

There we go. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as i enjoyed catching them. HA!

April 1st is our trout opener and a good one it was! grin 35 degrees with snow/rain showers all morning but the fish didnt mind.

My dad and I started off on a "finger lake" trib looking for lake run rainbows. This is usually a poke and hope excursion with a fish or two being considered good. We lit them up prety good this morning and some big ones too.

Right away I got this 18incher, fresh and full of spunk...

My father was into fish also...

We fished there till about 10 covering a bunch of the stream. Both of us landed and lost a few more medium fish before heading off to another creek for holdover browns. This creek hadnt been stocked yet and is small but fish survive in it well. We picked up 4 browns in the 12-15 inch range before heading hme...

Here's a couple old pics from last year. These are my biggest trouts I've ever caught. Both caught on the same stream in western WI.. Hoping to join the 20"+ club this year. The first one was during C&R season and the second was from early June.

New buddy Tommy is holding a solid 12." Beautiful creatures huh? Brookies are part of the arctic char family, technically not a trout. Going to smoke a few this weekend.
