best spinnerbait for going through weeds

What is the best spinnerbait that stays weedless while fishing heavy cabbage or bulrushes? I like those Pearson grinders or buchers spinnerbaits. Is there a spinnerbait or any other bait for that matter that does a good job of staying weedless?

You are correct about the Pearson Grinders. I have found them to be the best for going through weeds, especially Milfoil. Comes through clean and easy. The Ace Tandems are pretty good to, and straight out produce fish.

There are a number of quality spinnerbaits out there. The real key to fishing them in heavier cover, is using single hook models. Ducktail makes a weedless spinnerbait, with a plastic grub and a weed guard over the hook.

Rad dogs.

slop master.

grinders.

Voo Doo tails.

Ducktails.

Any of these brands can get the job done for you. Roz-tail also makes a good custom bait that you can buy at affordable

prices. There are probably a lot more different brands of spinnerbaits out there, than most other styles of baits. It is just a matter of finding the one you like the best. smile

slopmaster is my most used. on the rivers i fish weeds are rarely an issue, sometimes though, and it works best for me in weeds. the head design is really what does it for me though, i like the way it falls and retrieves. i custom re-tie them bend and change the blades to colorado's too for slower rolling tactics. i can't really pinpoint it, but they really seem to hook up/stay hooked better for me. it's weird. but my best guess is the sleek head design making it not turn or whatever when it gets hit. but i'm just guessing.

Hiya -

Kind of depends on what "weeds" you're talking.

Long-arm spinnerbaits like Jack Shriver's HiJacker are by far the best for rushes. They bait will tilt when the arm hits a stalk and won't tip back up until the arm clears. With the arm that runs past the hook point, or nearly so, you won't snag up. A short arm bait like a Grinder tips back upright just in time to run the hook into the rush stalk.

Grinders and other short arm baits like Northland Bionic Bucktail spinnerbaits helicopter better and fish better in thick stuff like coontail or cabbage. The blade helps knock leaves and fronds away from the hook, and the V-front arm blocks weeds from the hook.

Some baits can do both pretty well - Rad Dogs are a good example. But...the

Spinnerbaits are inherently versatile, but there are fairly simple design differences from model to model that really change how well they work in different situations. Either pick generalist designs, or be careful about what you use when or you can get really frustrated.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

What Rob said is some really sound advice. I agree completely. I am a really, really big fan of the grinder. It is fantastic in the weeds (and in the open water), but the place where it really struggles is in the rushes. Switching to the Rad Dog really helps. I've had some good success with the Ghost-tail spinner baits too. Just got some Shrivers stuff...looking forward to using them as well.

Shriver baits are the best I have found for the reeds. Love the spinners baits for reeds, casting or trolling. The buzzers really turn the fish on in the shallows, but have caught a few buzzing over the cabbage weeds. Cast A Way

Anyone give A-Team's (Mehsikomer) Assassin spinnerbait a whirl yet? I caught Bob's seminar at the Sports Show and this sucker caught my attention. Not sure why but I suppose its cause its a bit different.

I picked up one of the A-Team lures last year and probably didn't throw it enough, but the best way to describe it would be to picture realling a whole drumb set in at the same time, symbols and all...

I'll really have to give it some more time this year. There is definitely some flash.
