It's not uncommon for their tails to be that pointed, even at that age.

The first two pics are definitely males, and most of the males that I have caught in this area are close to that color. Gray to bluish gray, sometimes really dark. Males have bigger heads in relation to their bodies, and look especially big-headed during the spawn.

The last pic is a female. Again, pretty typical color for a female. They tend to have that copper/gold color, a smaller head, and they seem to carry their weight in the belly.

Of course, these are only my observations. And I've caught gold-colored males, and gray females. But they are in the minority.

Thanks for the replies gents. Getting ready to head back out there this afternoon and evening. Although the wind is pretty narly, and it looks like it might rain,I am hoping for a few more fish, and hopefully I can find one in the 28-30" range.

Caught 10 channels, my fishin partner also caught 10, this being the biggest(4lbs.). All the rest were 1-3 lbs. Pretty good day.

I like how the cats always look so healthy early in the year, before they start beating up on each other and before the temps are optimal for infections!

Was down in Illinois this weekend on Pool 19 of the Mississippi and actually had more down time than I anticipated...and had my heart broken. If I would have brought my rod the channel cats were going crazy on Saturday. It was like 65 degrees and everybody was lining up on the banks and catching fish.... Next time I guess.

Well, a little late, but here is the report from Sunday night. Four of us met at a local cat hole around 5:30 - 6:00. If I had to choose one word it would be "WINDY"!!! The wind was going strong the entire evening. The only way you could really detect a bite would be holding your rod. We managed nine fish total, the largest going 27 1/2 " and 8 lbs. all in all a great time!

Caught our first channels today.. Got 8 fish, all pretty small but it was sure fun.. Ice still on the banks and getting Channels out of the Redwood River.. wow, pretty fun.
