Someone wouldn't really do this would they?

I arrived in the general area I planned to fish this afternoon and was drilling holes to check depth. I was using a 6" hand auger and was just reopening some holes that looked to be relatively fresh. I came to where a permanant house had been and in the hole I was going to re-open the snow/ice were blue colored and there was a residue. There was just a skim in the center of the hole but the edges had closed up a little more.

I'm not sure what the residue was but I became disturbed when the thought of anti-freeze came to mind. Would someone really be crazy enough to do this? The garbage left behind on the ice is bad enough but this would take things to a new level.

The only antifreeze that I can think of that is blue is the stuff you put in your washer fluid tank. I have seen at some bait shops that they put some kind of additive in the water with the bait that is blue maybe thats was what it was?

You really would think that people are smart enough not to dump windshield washer fluid down the hole but don't hold your breath. I would like to think they had minnows with the blue food color in the water. No one should be dumping there minnows in any lake unless the minnows were trapped in that lake.

Or could the blue color be what you would get from the septic holding system from a camper? I would think that the blue anti-freeze would just dissolve into the water since it is methanol. Someone else could have poured some of the windshield washer type anti-freeze out to check the depth through the ice where the old house was. I am not defending any actions, no chemicals should be dumped in our lakes.

It's easy to think the worst from people and, unfortunately, one isn't often disappointed in this regard.

However, it's hard to say what it was. Could have been blue Gatorade for all we know. I'm sure the fish don't groove on it but that would be an example of something pretty inert that is blue color.

With the snow we are getting..Ahhhh..I just can't see the logic in food coloring as a marker.

Building a snoman that pointed to the hole would be more effective than marking with food coloring. wink

If the center of the hole were the blue was concentrated was blue ans soft, likely it was washer fluid...it would freeze up last and get pushed to the center. My vote is washer fluid...and it is a bad plan at that too.

My guess is blue powerade or a blue raspberry slushie from the gas station. All that sugar in there would help keep it from freezing and might have left the residue you are talking about. could be that blue minnow bucket water i see now then too.

why would somebody have blue window washer fluid or antifreeze out in the ice house?

I've had stranger things.....

If they had intentions of using it to keep the holes open they would be bringing it with.

No idea what the blue fluid was, but don't put anything past people.

I think it was fairly common 30-40 years ago for people to use antifreeze in their holes. Can anyone verify this? I was a kid in the 70's but I remember stories of dogs getting sick from drinking that stuff.

wow now thats an interesting point...my father was a hard nose guy like most from that area and had to walk 10 miles every day to get to school when he was a kid...hated anything that had to do with global warming or the thought of someone telling him to put out his cigarette...just a different time back in them days...and they didnt have gas powered augers either I bet...so I believe it...but Do not support it
