Sturgeon Excursion, April 18th and 19th 2009

I think what makes this such an appeal, is that not only are they the biggest fish in the state, the fishing couldn't be much simpler.

I agree Darren. Not many places you'll see an old 14' Lund with a 15hp anchored next to a Ranger 621 w/ a 225hp and the Lund has every chance to outfish the Ranger. grin

I like seeing those pictures and reports, keep them coming.

After getting up at 2:30 AM and making the drive up there, sleep deprivation starts right of the bat. Then getting up at 5:30AM, fish all day is all this guy can handle without getting some sleep.

Next year I think I'll schedule a nap at noon and try that night fishing. smile

As hanson said, we caught all our nice fish in the bay. 18' treated us well, but our largest came in 22'

Best fishing was from sundown till you couldn't stand it any longer (but again our largest fish of the trip (64.5) came in the daytime).

Grandpa Dewayne Highlights

Caught his biggest fish of his life and the biggest fish of the trip between all our boats.

64.5" x 25" (that ruler below the fish is 72") ~ 68lbs

Fighting the monster (love the squint on his face). It took 47 minutes to land this fish.

Steve Highlights (my Dad)

Caught his biggest fish of his life.

Big story for Dad.... He fought a fish for 1hr 20min and lost it. Absolutely heartbreaking. The fish surfaced once, but we could only see it's head. By the fight alone, guess it over 70" (100lbs)

47"

No problemo Chuck! And enjoy! Lot's of river for me to hide out on when necessary. Anchor rope snaggers eh?? I'm doing pretty good on those this season, last week in one short afternoon trip I got 1 fat female right away followed a 1/2 an hour later by an old grey faced male. Then to finish the evening I got a double which were a father/son it turned out!

2 circle hooks and 2 baitholder types added to collection!!

Keep your eyes peeled I'll be in that same 20 Alaskan as a coupla years back or maybe a small red kickboat.

    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
