Transducer frozen solid in my Marcum LX5

I have an LX5 and love it, but I do have one complaint. The transducer can and will freeze solid in the plastic housing in the softpack. Its happened 3 times this season so far--2 times were no big deal because I had warm drink to pour on the transducer. This weekend I had nothing, however, and my morning outing was ruined because the transducer was frozen solid as a rock in that housing.

So I suppose the only solution is to keep the transducer ajar on its side in the housing or keep the Marcum above freezing. Anyone else have this problem?

I drilled a small drain hole in mine and it helped some to drain the water but wasn't the answer. maybe wipe the bottom of the transducer very well if you leave it overnight in the truck. On your way to the lake in the morning, set it as close to the heater in the vechile as possible.

Otherwise, bring it in the house at night and let it all dry and your problems will go away.

Anytime you put a wet transducer in the plastic holder and leave it in sub freezing temps, you will have a frozen ducer.

One of my fixes once was to heat ice water in an old chew tin over my Buddy heater. Dumped the warm water on and the transducer popped out. This last weekend I had nothing and I about punted the LX5 into the woods. I might give the cellophane wrap trick a try.

Before I would've let that happen, we all know and have a warm body liquid that might have unfroze that ducer wink

I guess I don't understand this one. It seems like a no brainer. You should be bringing in your battery for a charge every time you go out. Why would you leave a $500 piece of sensitive electronic equipment out in your truck or shack not only at the risk of being stolen but also if the temps are going to be that cold. Seems like a little ignorance to me.

A Drain hole sounds like the best plan to limit icing in the field on a Marcum pack, and be sure to bring the unit in at night.

Be it a Marcum, Vex, or whatever brand it is better for the battery and it should be recharged after every use, once it has warmed up.

Allow warm up time before hooking up the charger and it will charge more fully and help to extend the life and longevity of use of the battery.
