What lakes do you want to see stocked????

Recommended Posts

I would love to see lake Mary in Alexandria stocked, it's a bigger lake with killer forage and great structure. It's kind of like little mille lacs in that it's shaped like a big bowl, loaded with tulibee and walleyes. Furthermore the Alex area is in very desperate need of a few more muskie lakes, the few in the immediate area can't sustain the amount of traffic over the last few years. I remember being on Lobster 8 years ago and seeing another Muskie angler was not that common but in the last few years that has change 180 degrees.

I think we should just let the Lake Assassins oops Associations dictate what happens... errrrrr wait that is already happening.

Funny how those who have property around the shore of the lake consider the lake "Theirs".

Muskellunge and northern pike many times inhabit similar habitats, and research in minnesota revealed some interesting findings. the presence or absence of northern pike appears to impact ultimate growth of muskellunge. muskie inhabiting waters without northern pike rarely reach total lengths of more than 40 inches, but muskie in the presence of northern pike occasionally surpass 60 inches. muskie also yield the prime shallower spawning habitats to northern. the reason is probably because pike spawn earlier and the fry would be already hatched and larger, eating the muskie fry. so they spawn in slightly deeper water preferably away from the northerns field.

so knowing this i say stock them where theres a healthy northern pike population. seems they need the competition.

side note... the croix has been ridiculed by some as having ''too many'' muskies. if there is such a thing. probly walleye fishermen. smile

b1gf1sh1 that's only true for Minnesota muskies. Wisconsin muskies are native to a range outside of the northern's native range. While they do just fine with stocking, spawning success is greatly reduced by populations of northerns in WI. In fact for LCO (used to be one of the best big muskie lakes in all of WI) they are encouraging angler harvest of northern's to help the muskie population. Musky bay as it was dubbed now only successfully spawns northern's in that lake. It used to be crawling with muskies around spawn time.

exactly where is this area thats outside a northern pikes native range? i've never heard of any large areas on the northern 35 percent of the planet that doesn't support them naturally. thats interesting. also i didn't hear about the harvest program. is this like a study of a certain area to see if it helps the muskie or is it the after effects of a study already done? thanks. smile

They were originally not found in the Hayward area or Upper Chippewa River basin. It's in a hole in the range, just as my cabin is outside of the native range of the walleye (as is most of Polk County, WI).

thanks vahn, awsome info. sounds like part of the issue in musky bay is the change in vegetation. still baffled on why that area didn't have native pike. sounds like theres plenty of spawning habitat. weird. interesting also about the 50'' limit. grow huge fish but have fewer. stock in double time? grin fish are eating good on the oilybow trout too. anyway great info, thanks.

I personally would love to see the NE part of the state, Ely area, stocked with Muskies. It is without a doubt the most beauitful part of the state, and it has some areas that can provide you an opportunity to experience Canadian-like scenery and conditions. A lot of people talk about the difficulties in going to canada, and also how crowded vermilion gets...Well, I think this is the most sensible answer. Snowbank, Birch, Burtnside, Shagawa..lots of possibilities there.
