Jared Allen update

Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen and his agent are at Winter Park talking contract with the Vikings, but that doesn’t mean a trade is imminent.

The Vikings can come to a contractual agreement with Allen, the Chiefs’ franchise player, but any decision on a trade is in the hands of his current team.

At a pre-draft press conference today, Chiefs officials gave no indication that they were in any hurry to move Allen, who has said he anticipates being traded by draft day.

“We’ll see what happens,” team president and general manager Carl Peterson said. “At this point, nothing has happened. Continuing to talk about it over the next 24, 48 hours is just pure speculation. If something does happen, we’ll let you know. If it doesn’t happen, he’s our franchise player.”

The Vikings could always sign Allen to an offer sheet, which the Chiefs would have seven days to match.

That would cost the Vikings two first-round draft choices, though, if Kansas City declined to do so.

Peterson, asked if the Chiefs would match an offer, said: “I don't know at this point. I haven't seen any contract offer.”

Allen is tentatively scheduled to visit Tampa Bay early next week

it's obvious that getting allen in here would make the fans go off the chain...i guarentee there won't be any blackouts if he sign him...he's a young beast with a non stop motor...he'd make the whole defense better without a doubt..he sacks the qb..he causes hurries..he forces fumbles..he plays the run like a stud..he even makes a few td catches...imo we'd have the best D line in the nfl with him...personally i'd like to see robison on the other end as the starter...i think robison is a 10+ sack guy with a full time starting opportunity.

with a mad pass rush and a dominate run stopping defense even mediocre cb's and safeties look great...our line backers would have monster holes to blitz...who u gonna double team? you can't double allen, k will and fat pat at the same time...our other end would be singled every single play...by time they decide who they want to double henderson and greenway and our other line backers can run free at the qb..our corners will only have to cover for a short period of time instead of all day.

dominating defenses do win championships thats proven...our offense is good enough to get the job done when we don't give up alot of points...all tjack has to do is manage the game and not make to many dumb plays...if he keeps progressing and ends up with reliable recievers that actually hold on to the ball they can't stack the box every single play...that means AP and taylor will eat teams alive...if we can get any kind of passing game going we can win alot of games...winning the NFC this season is very reachable.

all in all allen is a gamebreaker...a guy like that can single handedly win you a big game...not to mention he makes everyone around him better in the meantime...he makes smith and odom look like preschoolers thats why i was happy when they got signed...i didn't want to settle for a mediocre player for big money when we can get an elite gamebreaker for big money.

only thing that sucks is the DUI thing but everyone says he's been clean for awhile and doesn't even touch alcohol anymore..if that wasn't hanging over his head i'd say screw it and sign him to an offer that kc won't match and give them the 2-1st rounders...but with the DUI thing means we can get him cheaper in a trade...hopefully a 1st and 3rd but i wouldn't even flinch for a 1st and 2nd.

only a certain amount of a big contract is guarenteed money...there would be things in the contract that would protect us if he happens to get in trouble again...we could make it more attractive to him by adding incentives for proformance and staying out of trouble, ect.

this move would finally let me forgive the vikes for dealing moss lol...i was hoping for the vikes to make this move since the beginning of the year...i was posting about it back in march...i'd be disappointed if we were this close and let him go...zigy and childress haven't been messin around lately so i hope we get this done soon!!!

Allen update: If you read today’s story on Jared Allen, you know he was supposed to leave town the Twin Cities this morning. His agent, Ken Harris, pretty much confirmed that happened in an e-mail about Allen’s visit to Minnesota. “I can’t really go into anything now outside of how impressed [Jared] has been with the organization here,” Harris wrote. “Myself too. Hope we have reason to talk in a few days.”

Talks will continue between the Vikings and the agent about a multiyear contract. Dialogue between the Vikings and Chiefs about a trade also will be ongoing.

The big question now is if and when Allen still plans to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We’ll be working on chasing that down today. Meanwhile, since all of us read Profootballtalk.com it would be silly to ignore this bit of speculation. I have to believe the Vikings are hoping they can work out a trade with the Chiefs, so this never becomes an issue.

ABSENT TRADE, VIKES “LIKELY” TO SIGN ALLEN AFTER DRAFT

Posted by Mike Florio on April 20, 2008, 8:47 a.m.

We received a text message and a phone call late Saturday/early Sunday from a league source who shared with us a curious development regarding the Minnesota Vikings’ ongoing efforts to acquire Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen.

Per the source, the Vikings are “likely” to sign Allen to an offer sheet after next weekend’s draft, if a “fair” trade can’t be worked out before then.

The move meshes with the idea that came us to like an acorn to a blind squirrel on Saturday. With the Chiefs reportedly wanting a first-round pick and a second-round pick for Allen, why not simply nab Allen with a poison-pilled offer sheet and foist on the Chiefs the Vikings’ first-round picks in 2009 and 2010?

The fact that the Vikes apparently plan to pursue this tactic is a strong indication that Allen’s visit to the Twin Cities has resulted in an agreement between the player and the Purple regarding the money that will be paid to the NFL’s sack leader in 2008.

But there’s a wild card in this scenario. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reportedly interested in Allen, and could be squeezed into besting the Vikings’ pre-draft trade offer if the Bucs know that Allen would otherwise be poised to sign a post-draft offer sheet in Minnesota.

Then again, if Allen has made up his mind that he wants to play in the land of 10,000 lakes (but hopefully not 0.10 percent BAC), the Bucs will be out of the picture, and the question will be whether the Vikings get him before the draft, or after it.

A couple of readers have asked us whether the Vikings could sign Allen to an offer sheet right now, since it’s less than seven days before the first day of the draft. But even though a team with a franchise player has up to seven days to decide whether to match an offer sheet that he signs, the team can also decide before the seven days expire to not match it. In this case, doing so would give the Chiefs the Vikings’ first-round picks in 2008 and 2009.

And since the Chiefs would surely prefer to get extra draft picks for Allen right now (especially since G.M. Carl Peterson might not be around to use picks in 2009 and/or 2010), it’ll be critical for the Vikings to dust off the poison pill, if they want to be sure to acquire Allen. Otherwise, the Vikes will have merely negotiated on the Chiefs’ behalf Allen’s long-term contract to stay in Kansas City.

It sounds like Ziggy will do whatever it takes, I would do the offer sheet if KC wont do the trade. I would like to get Allen and keep all of this years picks, lets go all out this year to win it all now!

No contract agreement yet between Allen, Vikings

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No deal yet between Allen, Vikings

Defensive end Jared Allen left Minnesota on Sunday without agreeing on a contract with the Vikings.

The Chiefs and Vikings also had not agreed to terms of a trade that would send the discontented Allen to Minnesota in return for draft picks.

The trade terms appear to be the bigger impediment. An NFL source indicated that Allen and the Vikings were close enough to an agreement that one could likely be hammered out if the two teams agree on the draft-pick compensation.

Allen could make a visit this week to see the Buccaneers in Tampa.

Allen, who led the NFL in sacks last season with 15 1/2 , has wanted out of Kansas City since negotiations for a long-term contract broke down last year.

The Chiefs made Allen their franchise player this year and are obligated to offer him a one-year, $8.9 million contract.

He is free to sign a contract offer sheet with the Vikings, Bucs or any other team. The Chiefs would have the right to match.

If they decline, they would receive two first-round draft picks from Allen’s new team. Vikings coach Brad Childress told reporters in Minnesota last week the Vikings would not trade two first-round picks for Allen.

A first and a third round pick is plenty of compensation for Mr. Allen. We need the second round pick for a o-lineman that can play left tackle. I have a sinking gut feeling that Mr. McKinnie will have plenty of vacation time this fall. I believe that Mr. Goodell will not let Mr.McKinnie play all 16 games this year, if any. I hope to high heaven that I am wrong.

the allen deal is in the bag...he wants to play here and we are close to a contract agreement already...allen will end up where he wants is what it comes down to..and he wants to be here.

tampa can't offer him anymore then we are willing to pay him anyway and we have better picks...tampa only has 5 picks this season anyway.

allen is smart and knows he has a better chance of winning here..so even if tampa did offer the chiefs more then us he could say no thanks i won't sign...unless they were gonna offer him way more money then us which they won't anyway...no team is gonna give away their 1st and 2nd or 1st and 3rd for a guy to play with them for 1 year.

here we go jared here go!!!

You’ll need a subscription to read the article, but basically, Scout.com is reporting that the Vikings have increased their trade offer for Kansas City stud defensive end Jared Allen. The Purple have spent the past few days dangling this year’s first- and third-round draft picks in front of the Chiefs — however, according to a source, they have recently added their second-round pick in 2009 to the offer.

A day or two ago, I considered Tampa to be an outside contender for Allen, but I never really thought they’d pose a serious threat to the Vikings in the Allen sweepstakes. Might this sudden increase in the Purple’s trade offer signify that the Bucs are more committed to landing Allen than I’d initially suspected?

Anyways, this apparent turning point in the Allen negotiations is sure to be highly controversial. You’d be hard-pressed to find a Vikings fan that doesn’t think Allen is worth first- and third-round picks, but when you throw in next year’s second-rounder, things get more dicey. While this deal is preferable to spending two first-round picks on Allen (which is what would happen if the Purple ended trade negotiations and simply signed Allen to an offer sheet), the prospect of giving up three highly-valued draft picks is a tough pill to swallow.

So, if you were in Spielman’s shoes, would you bite the bullet and send this year’s first- and third-round picks to the Chiefs, along with your second-rounder in 2009? Although I’m seriously [PoorWordUsage] that the previous offer apparently wasn’t enough to satisfy Chiefs GM Carl Peterson, I would ultimately pull the trigger on this deal.

I’d do so with reluctance, but at the end of the day, the possibility of seeing Allen play alongside the Williams brothers on the Vikings’ defensive line is too appealing. Ultimately, I wouldn’t be able to pass up the opportunity to land a superstar defensive end — even if the price was too high for my liking.

Allen’s the missing piece of the puzzle on defense, as the Vikings’ pass rush would immediately become nightmare-inducing for offensive linemen on the NFL’s other 31 teams. The days of an incompetent pass rush would suddenly be a distant memory. And with a “win now” attitude in full swing within this organization, I could part ways with a handful of draft picks if the Vikings could acquire a player who would significantly improve their chances of making a playoff run in 2008.

It’s hardly a secret that the Vikings and Allen have reached a tentative agreement on a long-term contract. With that in mind, it would be a shame to see the deal fall apart in these advanced stages because of Peterson’s stubbornness…at this point, I’d simply give Carl what he wants, and finally complete the trade.

No, this isn’t the second coming of the Herschel Walker trade. The Vikings would not be giving away the house, if they did indeed deal those three draft picks. Let’s get this trade done, once and for all.

This is starting to get pricey for our draft picks. This years 1 and 3, next years second sounds like alot. I say stick with the 1st and 3rd this year, the Cheifs dont want him and cant afford him. So they will take the best offer. Which is our first and our 3rd.

I think 09 and 10 1sts sound better then a 1,2,3 offer. I want to win now!

If this Allen deal gets done, no matter how, I sure hope they know what they're doing with Jackson. With that much talent on defense, an improved receiving corps, and a top 3 running back, THEY NEED TO WIN NOW! They can't afford to develop Jackson, they have to be ready to win now if they want a crack at the big prize.

Didnt KC hold out forever on the Trent Green trade last year and then have to settle for MUCH less than what was originally offered? I could be wrong, but I thought that was how it went down.

You would think they would want to get a deal done.

All we need is a thread about that now. Vikes are not moving, plain and simple.

Here in the KC area, we are a little more than P.O'ed that the Chief's are going to let Allen go. BUT, as a forever VIKING fan I am thrilled that he might be going to the VIKES, what a great addition he would be.
