Deadiest Catch!!

I enjoyed the two shows last night. The underwater footage was pretty cool. Can you imagine their budget? Millions. With 45+ million viewers, they can do it.

Troubling to see the ghost fishing. When old pots are dropped they keep fishing and keep catching (and killing crabs). Imagine our oceans worldwide and all the traps and nets that are still fishing. Marine resources were thought of as untouchable. There is a reason there is such a short season and quota on crab.

Still, a great show for a variety of reasons. Great drama. Best reality show (and I hate reality shows) out there.

Da_chise,

I didn't recall them talking about ghost fishing on the show but I haven't caught them all either.

I just have to think that a discarded pot with no bait won't attract as many crab as a freshly baited one. So maybe thats a little consolation.

I'm not defending it, because I hate trash thrown in the water as much (I think) as you do. Just mentioning my optomistic thought. ;\)

So, what is the definition of "ghost" fishing anyway? Wondering if I guessed correctly.

Wanderer, They didn't talk about ghost fishing, it was just a general observation. If you google it there is a lot of information out there. Good reports by NOAA, FAO, the Pew Institute for Ocean Science, etc. Basically there gets to be a lot of lost fishing equipment that continues to fish and assists in the destruction of fisheries. There is little by which to regulate or control it, and recovering the equipment is even more challenging.

From fishonline: ghost fishing: the phenomenon whereby lost nets or traps continue to fish.

There is some consolation that the pots aren't baited but what actually happens is they continue to fish, catch new organisms which die, and in turn attract new organisms (crabs in this case).

my take is there will be drama-a-plenty... look how it's starting... the blessing of the fleet fritzing out, Mama Hillstrand's premonition, the Wizard splitting a seam en route to Dutch Harbor, the Northwestern just about leaving without Junior, Jake borrowing Phil's credit card for a flat panel TV, the Northwestern's late start due to mechanical issues...

*excited* I can't wait! cool.gif

Guess there is a yellow F250 at the bottom of the sea now. Crabs are probably all over it! Looks like it was a tougher season than the last couple of years.

Was fun to see some new episodes again.

I'm suspicious of the kid on the Northwestern. I think he has a drug problem. Looks way different, seems a lot more touchy this season, his attitude did a 180 from last season, and almost missed the boat because he was "on the phone". Judging from the previews it looks as though he gets an attitude adjustment in the form of a fist fight later on in the season from the fellow who got arrested a season or two back.

I think the TV purchase was a little over the top. I know a lot of those interactions are staged, but that was just too much.

I sure hope they don't try to "make" stories and just let it unfold.

I know that's part of the show, and it what makes it good. But sometimes it's too fake.

I was going to bring that up also, he looks like he is messed up. I was looking at a video for the new deadliest catch game and him and Jake were talkin and he looked burned out. I think hes gonna get a beat down or tossed off the boat by the end of the season. Should be interesting. I think this season is gonna be one for the ages, just look at all the stuff that has gone wrong so far, the superstitions that havent been done. My last question, the truck at the bottom of the sea, would the fish and game get after them for dumping a truck to the bottom of the sea????

Concerning the TV purchase, wouldn't they spend every minute not on the deck work by eating or sleeping? I don't see there being alot of time to get caught up on episodes of Desperate Housewifes while not at sea.

There is a lot of setups for disaster again, even more than previous seasons I think. I wish they'd lay off the rookie problems (greenhorns) and concentrate on issues arising while not docked.

And why is no one else fishing brown crab? That boat was cleaning up!

My guess on the brown crab is only a few boats can do it, plus the setup looks more complex so it would be loss not to fish red crab, also maybe the other boat doesnt fish oppies maybe. all guesses

honestly to me if you can do like 30 hrs of work or whatever they do without a break everyone must be on something. thats hard work. Phils son said he had like 56 red bulls in like 5 days or something! thats awesome! And switching gears to the wizard i dont know how those two greenhorns will fair. i think they will get beat up fast...thats justmy opinion.

It will be a good season, Is the greenhorn on the Northwestern the same one that got the jacket at the end of last season?? He seems like a totally different kid. The truck i think is the start of something, we will have to see if anything else happens because of it.

I'm really starting to like the Hillstrand's boys, not sure about the new kid but the older guys are cool.

I enjoyed the show last night, but there is an undercurrent that makes me a bit uneasy.

It seems like they might be setting up some drama artificially - Last years Greenhorn on the NW suddenly unreliable and crabby, Phils kid buying the flat screen, etc.

Well the NW kid i think the drugs got to him but Phils kid nothing has changed, he did the same stuff before, i dont know if you would call it artifical drama, they dont seem like the acting type when millions are at stack and they could die.
