Wheel House Trailer Plates

Recommended Posts

For those that don't know, the state DVS is requiring that all wheel houses have a trailer registration.

Driver and Vehicle Services(DVS), the Minnesota State Patrol and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), have determined that a fish house on wheels meets the requirements of a trailer and must be registered as such.

Registration is required for:

• Enclosed trailers with

cargo doors that haul allterrain

vehicles or other

cargo and are used as a

fish house.

• Other trailers

manufactured for use as a

fish house.

• Recreational trailers

used seasonally as a fish

house.

These vehicles must be registered in one of the trailer classes. Recreational trailers must be registered in the recreational class. DVS has notified dealers that fish houses on wheels are considered trailers. Anyone in the business of selling them has to have the appropriate Minnesota dealer’s license. If you have any questions, please contact the deputy registrar procedural line.

A guy I know sent me the link. Here's more info.

It is possible that someone who has a fish house on wheels will need to have trailer registration from DVS and a fish house license from DNR. Customers who are unsure if they need a fish house license should contact DNR at (651) 296-6157 or (888) 646-6367, or email [email protected].

FYI - I spoke to the licence branch in Oct about this and, at that time, you did not need to road license a wheelhouse (you were subject only to DNR shelter license laws). So...this must be a recent change. (???) Thanks for the info.

I wonder if this change was because the change in the requirements for shelter licensing.

In the good ole days on my wheeled house I did not have to have a trailer license since it had a shelter license.

Now I will have to have a trailer license and a shelter license since I at times leave my wheeled house on the ice unattended to run into town for supplies.

Someone at the state saw where they can make alot of money in a hurry. When do you think they were going to get around to telling everyone, after the tickets are wrote out. confused.gif I knew you needed a plate if you could haul with it.

DVS has notified dealers that fish houses on wheels are considered trailers.

Seems odd that they are now considered trailers. Before toy haulers and cargo/utility modified trailers entered the picture they were classified strictly fish houses.

Nothing has changed for the guy with a house that has a walk in door only with no cargo, hauling or utility purpose. Pretty prominent difference between the two styles, and owner intentions.

Sounds like the guy with just the house got grouped in with all the multi function/purpose units.

You may want to contact your DMV with this question. There seems to be confusion. I emailed the DNR - they told me I needed a trailer license on the wheelhouse. I then called the DMV branch in Chisago Cty - they emphatically told me I did not need a trailer license as long as the fish house is fixed to the trailer. (????) I sent the DMV the email response from the DNR. The DMV was going to contact the DNR. We will see what happens. ???

I just got off the phone with the DVS after waiting on hold for 30 minutes to speak with a real live human being. They said it is new this year and that if you do not have registration you will have to register all fish houses with wheels. He said you have to have a statement of origin in order to register and that you have to get that from the manufacturer. What a pain in the ars.

I did ask him that and he said you have to fill out a afidavid that you made it and provide pictures and I think he said they had to inspect it to make sure their is no serial number from a manuafacturer.

Great, converted campers would seem to fall under this classification, too. We just added removable skids to it this year, maybe we won't put the wheeled running gear back on it this year and drag it down the road on skids back home? grin.gif Another $50... man, sometimes these fools in St. Paul really get to me.

After we all got excited about being able to clean and eat fish on the ice and use a portable or wheeled house daily with no fish house license, now this!

Gonna have to start buying tabs for the camper turned fish house again and will have to try registering the wheeled house as home made since I just bought the frame with no manufacturer markings.

My cousin was given a ticket the other day for not having his license number on his 1 hour old portable fish house. Not excited to put a black magic marker all over the new X2.

To look on the bright side, this will be good for a few reasons.

#1. You will be able to get a seperate insurance policy for your wheeled house. No longer will you have to make a claim against your home owners policy if something happens to your wheeled house. Too many claims on your home owners policy and you'll get canceled. You should be able to insure it just like a regular trailer, either full coverage or liablity. In tow of course it would fall under your tow vehicles insurance policy.

#2. With a license plate and registration with the DMV it should be a hinderance to would be theifs. Up until now with no license or title they have been easy to steal and "take up north".

More than likely the change was made with all the high end fish houses being made. At the ice show was amazed to see all the $10-30K wheeled houses.

I'm guessing that is sarcasm because that's already against the law in a lot of places, and for the record, I'm not a smoker.

Free country yes, free Minnesota, no.

When I built my fish house trailer, I used it for a year as a utility trailer, and registered it as such, getting a life time license as it's less than 3000 lbs GVW.

Now that I have a house on it (still under 3000 lbs GVW), do I need to register it differently? I keep hearing comments on license plates. I have a tougue sticker, that should be it, correct? If not, I feel I should be seekin' a refund from the state for the $89 life time license fee!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
