Advice on Buying a Portable

coldmark

Recommended Posts

I'm considering buying a large portable, 8x8. Is it worth it? What type? Wood heat?

Background: I built an ice house on wheels last year. I did it on the cheap but I absolutely love how it turned out and don't want to change a thing. It is not a drop down, and actually doesn't even have holes in the floor. It's more of a camp on the ice with a bar, kitchen area, couch, loft, etc. I would use the portable to jig out of and move around. I'm also going on a big trip this winter and could use the portable for that as well. Any advice is appreciated.

How many people are going to fish in this house, and do you want to be able to move to look/keep on the fish. If so you would like a flip over style. A 8x8 would not be as Portable as you think, a lot of work. Otter is they way to go for flip, or Clam for a big setup style house.

If you are considering a flip over style, do yourself a favor and check out Otter Outdoors. I could go on and on about the quality of their portable. Just take a look at the tub and the poles and canvas. Also look at how they seal the wind out around the bottom of the tub.

A+ for a Otter house and many different styles to choose from. They also have great accessories for the house like their hitch and the pole holders are very nice. Dont forget to look at their hyfax for the tub also as they will make the tub last forever.

Harvey Lee,

Good call on the hyfax! It also helps for pulling sled around. It keeps it from flying around behind you when pulling it behind Snowmobile,ATV or truck!

The only down side I can find about my otter is the zipper flap door and my heater. I had a buddy come over when we were fishing on ice and peeked in to say hi! He unzipped from top down and flap hit heater. I still have not fixed zipper yet, so I get half use of my zipper. Besides that I would never traded this shack. I love it!

While I have a Clam Voyeageur and love it, My only recomendation is to get a flip over. Go look at all of the brands and pick the one that fits your needs. Otter makes a high quality product, I prefer the seats in my Clam. As long as you like it and can fish in it, it works. Good Fishing. grin.gif

Go to the Ice show and check out all the houses there. Pick the one that fits you best. I like all my flip up houses (Fish Trap's) because they are light and easy for me to load and unload by myself.

If you have a chance to get to Thorne Bros you could get a lot of expert advice from them.

Good luck,

[Can one dude pull the Yukon around by himself? I like the room that thing has , but think I may be better suited with the Guide seeins how i'll be yankin it around by hand only. Does that make sense?

quote]I have the fish trap yukon. I am up and fishing in no more than a minute. For a bigger porty the Yukon is light and fits into the bed of my little truck. If you want to move just flip it over and off you go.

I have the Guide and I love it. I wish all of the FT's could zip together, since the Yukon Trap Link is not much larger than the Guide's. I haven't spent much time looking into other brands because I got a really good deal on my guide, but I have no complaints other than wanting to attach to other, larger TL houses of my friends.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
