2007 Portable Modification Get Together!"" Sat. 9/22 @ Thorne Bros.

It's about time to start planning for the 2007 Portable Modification Get Together. Yes, it's in the middle of the summer and I'm not putting the long rods away, but it is only about 4 months until we see first ice wink.gif

When: Saturday, September 22

Where: Thorne Bros - Fridley, MN

When: 10am - 4pm

This will be our 3rd Annual modification event and I'm really looking forward to seeing new and old ideas alike. Last year we had several drop-down fish houses in attendance, and of course a handful of portables as well.

Feel free to bring any tools or equipment to modify your fish house and we'll try and work together to help create those tricked-out on-ice fish catching machines!

There will be plenty of space to park the houses along side the Thorne Bros store.

We'll have a grill there for anyone interested in chowing down on a few brats, hamburgers, etc (bring your own food)... also feel free to bring any chips, salads, or any other food you would like to share or devour on your own wink.gif

Thorne Bros is also going to offer a discount/sale to all those in attendance. So if you're looking to checking to add a new Panfish Sweetheart, Walleye Sweetheart, or any variation of a custom Thorne Bros ice rod to your line-up, it will be an excellent opportunity to save a few bucks and see the rods first hand.

This is also a great chance to chat and meet with fellow FMer's and Pro Staff.

I'll be posting more information during the next couple months as we approach the event, so keep an eye out for more bits and pieces...

So, who plans on attending this year's modification get together?

See you there! smile.gif

***We have food!!! smile.gif

Timber Valley and Associates will be donating FREE brats and pop for those in attendance. Timber Valley is a rep group for MarCum and Jiffy, and they will also be showing off a few new ice houses that will be available for the 2007/2008 season.

So I would like to thank them for helping out with our get together.

Matt or anyone else,

Does anyone bring wheel houses to these or is it pretty much just the "real" portables? The reason I ask is that I recently bought a wheel house and thought that I might go and see what others have done to there's, not that I couldn't use any ideas for my X2 though. wink.gif

Thanks,

"hooks"

Thanks Matt,

If I make it there, I was just thinking that I should maybe bring it, that way some people might have some excellent ideas for it. I am considering that any ideas that I will have done to it by then as pretty basic or common, but you never know I guess.

What do ya know, I have that weekend off! I will probably swing buy, the sale incentive doesn't hurt either. Lots of good ideas last year, of course there hasn't been enough time to implement any of them on my portable! tongue.gif Also a great opportunity to meet some of the people you type to all the time!!

See you there!!

Matt, you can count me in again too. I don't know if I will bring my portable this year though, it's just too heavy to move on dry ground! I'll see when it gets closer to the date. It's nice to meet some of the like-minded folks from the site there, and it never hurts to see new ideas either. It was great to see Paul & Rick put together that house last year, they had some great ideas and shortcuts that made alot of sense. smile.gif

Looks like we're already putting together a good list of people who plan on attending. Very cool! The last couple years were a lot of fun, and I'm sure this year will be the same. I'm looking forward to it!

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
