Esoxcop, Now those are some true trophy bull sunfish. Seeing those pics bring back to a time long ago fishing a lake just outside the boundry waters. We could see the sunfish on the beds and in the water with the polorized sunglasses they looked the size of dinner plates. They did not disappoint and once captured they went 12 inches plus and well over a pound. I have never since that time seen sunfish the size of dinner plates but these pic certainly remind of that time and give me hope that the elusive monster bulls are still out there

Fantastic pictures and thank you for sharing.

I'm jealous!

My guess is that the lake you are fishing is private or else everyone in the area knows about the importance of selective harvest.

Congratulations on those trophy's!!! Did you happen to get a measurement on some of those Gill's?

Good fishing,

Corey Bechtold

All fish were caught on public waters. You just have to time the spawn right or you won't find em. The fish in the photos on both pages are 10.5 to 12.5 inches with the biggest weighing in at 1lb 13oz.

Esox, I've caught some big gills before, and those are absolutely incredible, I've only seen one that was 12", but it wasn't near as fat as those. This is my biggest, caught last winter and it went almost 11.5, but as you can tell your fish are considerably thicker.

I definitely believe you on measurements and would say you're being conservative on the weight! It doesn't look like you have real small hands, and those fish are just absurd.

Cy...I normally don't get excited about summer perch, but the ones in your pictures would get any perch fishermen excited, summer, or winter! Man, what nice looking fish, that coloring is great!

Perch fishing on Mille Lacs is one of my favorite winter outtings. I've also fished em in the fall for the last couple of years, although enjoyable, I'm not much for the crowds and the size isn't comparable to the winter season....so I cut that enjoyment short.

The last time up, my friend and I hunted the perch in areas away from the crowds and only wound up with afew, but we also got afew walleyes and about 20 largemouth bass up to about 3 pounds. That kind of surprised me, I thought the muskies would keep them kinda thinned down? Anyways, nice fish!

The Mississippi River perch are definitely making a comeback. I used to get Mille Lacs quality fish as a kid in the pool 9 area of the river. I don't fish down that way much anymore, concentrating my efforts mostly on pools 4 and 5 and have found some very nice size in recent years.

Juggs...Okay, here's the next question...do you fellas occassionally eat the fish you catch out of the Mississippi?

I've always been a little leary of eating anything that came out of the river from below the Coon Rapids dam on down.

I know that people do, I used to occassionally eat a walleye out of the lower Mississippi when I was younger and it didn't seem to cause any harm?

I still have all my parts and I don't have any extra parts that I'm aware of? I don't glow and my teeth are still fairly good. Everything works...of course, not as good as when I was a younger buck, but I don't think that is the fault of eating fish out of the lower Mississippi?

Anyways, that might be a fun trip to make, get a dukes mixtures of fish and catch the sights along the river. Not this year of course, maybe next?

Say, do they ice fish those perch with much luck, down there in the winter?

When I was a kid, my family ate gobs of fish from pool 9, which isn't quite as clear as pools 4 and 5. I still eat them, mostly in the winter as I do a lot of ice fishing on the river. I guess I don't see anyone throwing back the pannies. As far as the perch go, they really don't get targeted since there aren't great numbers of them like everything else. You might find a nice school from time to time. If you are specifically going after perch, I wouldn't pick the river as a destination. Now crappies and bluegills....that's another story.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
