Does anyone know if I will have to buy a seperate muzzle loader license on top of my firearms? Or can I hunt both under that license? Before anyone says call the dnr, I called already. They don't know anything. I might get the all season license so I can bow and slug hunt. Also for anyone who muzzle hunted last year how much was the license? Thanks alot

Kid

P.s. Am I the only one who is getting BUCK fever already?!?!

The muzzleloader season is one of the options when you buy a Firearms deer license. You chose one of the following; Zone 1, Zone2, Zone 3A, Zone 3B, Zone4A, Zone 4B or Muzzleloader. For the $26 Dollar license you pick just one of the options. As of last season you can also purchase a bow license and use both tags, before you could only use one or the other tag, The allseason license comes with two tags and is valid for allseasons except 3B.

I'm going with the all season. My old man will have to also even though he'll be mad. I had intended on doing it anyways. I was trying to figure out the price difference. I am bow hunting for the first time this year so I'm jacked!!! I wish I hadn't waited til I was 33 though. My wife thinks I turn into an even bigger kid around september. With hunting then ice fishing behind that. Thanks for the info, Kid

Neiko,

They charge $5 for a replacement license if you lost it. The DNR will NOT let you "trade up" from a firearms to muzzleloader. Once you choose either firearms or muzzle it is a done decision until the next year. Just a little clarification for you.

According to the DNR regulations you can upgrade or change anything before the season starts and upgrade to an All Season or Multi-zone buck after the season starts, if you didn't use your tags.

From the DNR HSOforum:

Upgrading/Changing Firearms Deer Licenses

A person who has purchased a deer license and wishes to change a zone, license type, or season options may submit their original license and obtain a replacement license. There is a fee of $5 (plus a 75¢ issuing fee) for the replacement license, plus any increase in cost for the new license. Replacement licenses are available from any ELS

license agent. If a person submits both an archery and firearms license for replacement with an all season license, the value of both original licenses may be applied. Any replacement license may be issued before

the season for the original license opens. A person may upgrade an archery or regular firearms license (or both) to a multi-zone buck license or all season license after the original season has opened, if none of the original tags have been used. The upgraded license is valid immediately upon issue.

You think this is fun, pick up the hunting regs from another state and try to figure them out! My in-laws are from Wisconsin and I've looked into hunting over there but the regs are like reading foreign language! At least here in MN you're familiar with the basic rules and they're just tweaking them each year.

Get the all-season licence. I used to buy a gun and an archery licence, and then any bonus tags available, but I figured out that even though the all-season is a bit more expensive, it gives you more flexibility.

Fivebucks, they will let you trade up to a All-season for the difference plus $6 filing fee. It does not say a muzzleloader license though. I guess that way they get more money out of you. It would be cheaper to buy the firearm license and upgrade if you wanted to instead of buying the All season right away.

Code-Man,

I read that over a couple of times too. The way I read it was that you get three tags instead of two automatically, but can still tag up to 5 deer if you hunt where you can by insensitive err intensive harvest tags. Technically 6 if you were eligible for a landowner tag. Essentially it's one less intensive harvest tag you have to buy.

My read on it is that they figure the All-Season guys are the ones that shoot a big chunk of the deer & if they start them with one more tag they don't have to buy, maybe a few more does will be shot. That's just my speculation, nothing that I know for sure.

The legislature changed the all-season license and added the third tag. The intensive area bag limit is still 5 deer so you'd only need to buy 2 bonus permits (instead of 3). As for harvest, AS hunters tend to move around more but I don't think they kill a significantly higher proportion of deer relative to other license holders. I can tell you that license is growing by leaps and bounds.

Big Lake welcome to zone 2 it's great but not as good as zone 1. I just wish the state would have more hunting weekends. Drop down the number of tags and make it that you have to shoot at least a 4 pointer or something to count as a buck and make it so people don't have to rush to try and get the deer. Maybe I'm just dreaming but that is also why I bought a muzzleloader this year.

Thanks for answering my question who ever did it.

Neiko,

I guess I should read more carefully b/4 opening my mouth. I just hadn't read that and I usually read the regs cover to cover. I must of glossed over that one. Anyway, good hunting to all when we finally can.

so icornice what you are saying is anyone in any zone that buys a all season can shoot 3 deer. Im not doubting you im just making sure that is what you are saying cause i purchase one every year.

Yes, but in certain areas you'll have to mix and match seasons a bit. If you hunt a lottery area (blue) and want to kill 3 deer, you'll need to hunt in more than one season (ie archery and firearm). If you hunt in a managed (red) or intensive (green), you can kill 3 in any one season. The limiting factor is whether or not you need to apply for antlerless permits (lottery areas). I hope that answers your question.

So if I purchase the All Season License do I need to pick a zone for firearms or can I hunt any zone and any season?

You'll be asked what zone and permit area you hunt most often but you're not bound to those areas (they don't even print on the license). The information is collected for demographic purposes only and is used for hunter density estimates and mailing surveys out. The only season you CAN'T hunt is zone 3B. Why? It's the only open firearm season in the state and there's a feelings from landowners/locals that the zone will be innundated with people from around the state.
