From the Twins web-site.

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have acquired minor league righthanded pitcher Zach Ward from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for righthanded pitcher Kyle Lohse.

Ward, 22, was 7-0, 2.29 ERA (114.0 ip, 29 er), allowing 74 hits with 37 walks and 95 strikeouts, with an opponents batting-average-against of .188 (74-393) in 20 games (18 starts) for Dayton (A, Midwest League) this season. His 2.29 ERA ranked fourth in the Midwest League.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder was selected by the Reds in the third round of the June, 2005 free agent draft out of Gardner-Webb University.

Lohse, 27, was 2-5, 7.07 (63.2 ip, 50 er), allowing 80 hits with 25 walks and 46 strikeouts in 22 games (8 starts) for the Twins this season. Acquired by the Twins in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on May 21, 1999, Lohse has a career record of 51-57, 4.88 (908.1 ip, 493 er) with 289 walks and 561 strikeouts in 172 games (152 starts).

"I believe I made mention a week or so ago in another thread here that we would make a trade with the Reds..."

He's not a Red, he's a Dragon. That's our high school team. smile.gif

Ward isn't likely to do you any good this year, but he is regarded as having a shot at pitching in the big leagues eventually. Unfortunately the Reds are desperate. Lohse will get probably pitch tomorrow. I see his ERA is about 7, so he'll fit right in our bullpen. I pray this isn't the Red's new starter. frown.gif

Good trade for us. Sounds like this kid can make something out of himself eventually. Anything for Kyle.

I too wonder if TR didn't do this deal because he is setting something up that involves moving some of our pitching prospects. Soften the blow a little if Slowey or Perkins get dealt?

what kind of money was Lohse making a year? Anyways, whatever the amount, it will be nice to have that off the payroll. It was painful to watch him come into games this year knowing undoubtedly he would be giving up a run or two. I wish we could have traded him and some others this past spring to Texas for Blaylock.

So we basically just cut him and got nothing in return which was about all he was worth......

Non event really, hopefully we can make a trade that help's us......

Oh heck no!

Yes, we got rid of him, but it was not like a release. We got a very promising prospect. Check out his numbers. Granted he is a low-level guy and may or may not pan out, it looks like a great move to me, one of the Reds better pitching prospects.

P.S. I am disappointed we didn't get Soriano, but glad we didn't let Garza go.

We got absolutely nothing to help us win this year, when we are right in the thick of things!! Soriano sits there and doesn't get dealt at all, got a feeling that Washington was asking too much there.

Still I am disappointed in the Twins for not going out and either getting some offense or a pitcher to help them down the stretch!!

I just don't think now they will be able to keep up with the Yanks or Sox for that wildcard spot!!

Oh well, I can pray they will, but I got a bad feeling they will go un-answered!!

You think Lohse was actually worth more than a 50/50 prospect? He might have some ability, and good "stuff" at times (not enough times) but he is/was not worth more than a 50/50 prospect. Good Riddens...

AGREE 100% - Lohse showed some promise early in his career and maybe he will later, but right now he just is not getting it done the last couple years. Good move by the Twins - although I wish they would of some how got Soriano!!!

Thank you, the Twins sat around while others teams got players that could of helped the Twins. The Twins could of used a back-up 1b in Sean Casey, has a bat and good defense that would give Justin a day off here and there or bat DH for a game. With the outfield a tad injured they could of gotten Craig Wilson who plays both IF and OF or X.Nady from the Mets who was looking for a pitcher. Bert made a comment last night saying the Twins don't know if Stewart may play again this year due to his injury, hello. The maybe could of shipped Lohse to the Cubs for Maddox who could of helped the rotation being the 4th or 5th starter even thou Silva had a good game last night. Just my 2 cents.
