I'm looking as well. I looked at some cheapies for like $40. What does everyone think about them?

I use Midland radios and like them very much.I would also get the ones with a weather channel as they are nice if you get iffy weather on a bigger lake.

Make sure to get at a set with at least 5 watts of power and say a 5 mile range.The lower power ones dont work to well in hilly or wooded areas.The higher wattage ones do much better.I would also make sure they have VOX.I would think that 50 -75 dollars would buy you a set that would do pretty good.Iam talking about handheld ones if that is what your looking for.

i'm not sure about the newer ones, but i have an older set ( that i used to keep track of the kids ) they worked well, but went through batt. pretty fast. ( each one took three AA batt.)so you may want to look at rechargeable ones .my $.02

I would strongly agree with Harvey Lee. Look for a set of radios with the most distance coverage you can afford. When they say 2 mile or 5 mile range, that means a flat stretch of land or water with absolutely no trees, structures, hills, etc. Also, look at battery life. Mine eat thru the rechargable batteries about every 4 hours. They work fine, but the battery issue is frustrating. (i don't want to give the brand name for sake of causing ill will.)

We use the 5 watt Midlands around here everyday for 8 hours a day. Haven't had any recharging problems.

I've got a set of the cheapos and they satisfy my needs, but even on Mille Lacs I noticed a couple miles was pushing it. I will definitely be looking at the longer range ones for my next pair. I really like the idea of having the weather radio.

We had a pair of the Motorola 12 mile that we used this past fall. We took them back to Cabela's as soon as we got home from our trip. They had no range at all, sometimes we couldn't even get a 1/2 mile out of them. We had a pair of the cheap 5 mile ones on the trip before that worked just as well or better than the 12 mile ones. On the 12 mile ones you need a FCC license if you use the higher watt channels. We are still trying to decide what we are going to use on the next trip.

i have a pair of three y/o uniden frs/gmrs radios with 5-7 mile range, that set me back about $80 they run on 4 AA batts and have weather channels as well. range is fabulous on them and they have a range boost button. the channels 1-7 are long range and 8-20 are med range. and lots of sub channels for privacy. i am very pleased with them. and . does anyone really register them for licsence with the fcc? $15 for a year, for what? hmmmmm. ..... paul

I've got a set of Uniden FRS GMRS. Features to look for is the power saving. I've goofed a few times and left my radio on for days and still had power. Weather channels, scan and voice activated which is a nice when using a headset.

With all the electronics we carry now a days, switching to rechargeable batteries is cost effective and good for the Earth.

There is a guide on Mille Lacs who is also a pro walleye tournament fisherman who uses the Midland GXT 555 which I think I only sold by Cabelas. That may be the next set of radios i get. I currently have Motorola and they don't quite cut it for me.

I bought the Midland LXT310, 10-mile range and have been happy with them. $35/pair on sale at GM. And, that came with rechargeable battery packs, has weather channels and sub channels, hi power mode on some of the channels like others have stated.

That's what we use is the Midland GTX550's As far as the FCC license goes that's up to the individual. I did some research on it and determined that the FCC no longer has an investigative arm. So there's no one checking for licenses. However if they do get a complaint they will look into it. I think the license was $80 for 5 years.

I have a pair of the Cobra 7-Mile model. They worked great at a much greater distance then 7 Miles. We had them out hunting in Montana mountains with no troubles at all.

Does anyone know of a high quality head set with the universal 2 pin connection??
