Down the hole

I know we all try to be as careful as we can, but does anyone have interesting stories of items inadvertently lost down the ice hole(not talking about jerks who purposely drop things down the hole)?

Last year I was fishing with some guys and one of them had brought some (Contact US Regarding This Word) they knew from work. The whole day this guy is bragging about his stupid knife. The thing was huge, like Crocodile Dundee. Anyway he starts chipping some ice out of his whole and I told him that he could use my scoop or spud bar if he wanted. He said, no. His way worked better. Next thing you know the guy is swearing up a storm and he is lying on the ice with his arm down the whole up to his shoulder. Nobody said a word for about 10 seconds and then we burst out laughing. If you are ever scuba diving on French Lake try looking at about 45ft. grin.gif

My cousins were playing with a gameboy when they had first come out and one tossed the gameboy to the other and I watched as he fumbled it and down the hole it went. I was laughing pretty hard, but the other two found no humor in it. Funny part is we could see it and spent the rest of the day trying to hook it.

-Grandpas Scoop

-Mico Leatherman

-Head Lamp ( on ) The head lamp was lost on Red in 01 while staying in a 8x8 northlander with my girlfriend. Lost a crappie at the top of the hole, went into the water with my arm to fish it out. On the way down I knocked the headlamp off the table it was clipped too and spilled a Summit Winter on the back of my head which was on the table as well. Aparently I didnt smell all that great while we slept...got the crappie, missed the headlamp and didnt get anything else the rest of the night.

22' of water: set of car keys. Got em out with the aquaview. Had to chisel through 2' of ice about a foot or so over to the side. Used a leader full of weights & a red-eye that was in the fish house for some reason. Lost a nice buck knife, leatherman. All were dropped by my buddy.

One night I was flipping thought the tv channels and must have fallen asleep, the next day I was yelling at the kid looking for the remote and got thinking that I was the last to have it. Yes it was right over a hole where my arm was laying on the bunk. There in 22'of water was the remote, never did get it back. So much for the fancy holder on the wall for it. blush.gif

One time we needed to repair the gas auger so we brought in the shack to warm it up. Got all done with the repair and the last thing we had to do was hook up a spring that held the gas tank on. Well, wouldn't you know it the pliers slipped and the spring took off like a rocket. Bounced off a couple walls and the ceiling and then shot right down a hole.

Another one, my buddy dropped his flashlite down the hole. It landed on the bottom in twelve feet deep. It landed facing up, right towards us. Funny for sure because I don't think you could try to do that and have it land facing up.

Ya but if you think about it the batteries are usally on the bottom. But for it to stay like that is pretty amazing. I got one like 10 years ago my grandpa and i were fishing in mille lacs and we had a huge walleye and it barly fit though the hole it went down to grab it and his wedding ring fell ooff. Down into the lake it went. It was worth alot so, he hired scuba divers to cut a hole in the ice and go get. They found it luckly for him.

I've spilled my tackle box twice and lost a few jigs each time. I've also lost two minnow scoops by having the ice on the edges of the holes catch them and rip them right out of my glove. Isn't there some sort of saying that if you drop something while ice fishing it's going to go into the hole?

My cell phone dropped right down the chute as I was packing to leave one night after ice fishing. I had it zipped up in my coat front pocket but after my wife called, forgot to zip it back up and it slid right out straight into the hole. Got home, my son calls my cell and says "shsss...I hear something...blepblepblep...there's a fish talking on your cell phone!" grin.gif

My brother-in-law came ice fishing with us for the first time. He was in the house for about 5 minutes and was showing us his new cell phone. That's when it jumped out his hand, hit the floor, bounced off the table leg, and swished into the nearest hole. He was the only one not laughing.

A few years back went up to Red lake. Planned on fishing that night and the next day. Set up the house and started catching those mega slabs. My good buddy from Chisholm was doing his normal fishing ( not catching a thing ) so decided he needed to change jig colors. A full box I mean big tackle box on his lap. I looked over and one of his bobbers was down. He reacted kind of like he does in the boat with standing and setting the hook. The whole tackle box lay total empty over the hole. In his desperation to try and pick it up the table in the middle of the house holding my brand new mag-lite tips and could not have mad a more perfect bulls-eye down the hole. The best thing about fishing is you can sit back and reflect on your mistakes and have a few beers. He should have stopped at a few. He couldn't take the ripping. Finally ready to pack up he decides he wants to play WWF outside the house. As he come running at me to make the tackle I nicely stepped a side and he took down his brand new auger which he had drilled into the ice about 8". One quick note they don't work very well when the shaft is bent at a 90 degree angle. Turned out to be a pretty expencive trip. Now the laughs and giggles today are priceless. Way to go speedie AL your a hoot.

Good God Ragenald, where to start.

I've seen guys drop ice scoops, minnow scoops, eye glasses, pens, playing cards, tackle, poles, spuds, fish, another guys boot, money (change), cans of soup, silver wear, lead depth finders, sausage, walking cane, billfold, knives, leatherman tool, pliers, ring, watch, lower plate of false teeth, cans & bottles of beer/pop and probably a whole lot more.

No I didn't drop all of these but I dropped some. I guess the worst one was when a buddy reveresed the turning of a hand auger and the lower cutting part came un-screwed from the handle and down the hole it went, never to return. This happened on the 3rd hole being drilled for 7 guys. We had to head back to town and buy another auger.

years ago, my cousin and i had just gotten new ice chisels (the kind with the three points on the end), he brought his out to chisel a hole and i said, you should really tie a rope to the end just in case.. after a couple hours i decided to move, grabbed his chisel, and started to punch a hole, the chisel had ice on the handle and slipped right out of my hand.. the look on his face was priceless. i still have my chisel and he's reminded of the event every time we go fishing..

Many years ago, I was on a day trip to Winnie when my buddy reached in his pocket for something and dropped his ring of keys down the hole. Well, a few seconds later all five of us are standing at the hole with dumbfounded looks on our faces and wondering just how the heck we're going to get home that night. Then, all of the sudden, my buddy's bobber went down and all thought of the missing keys suddenly vanished. Fish on!! He pulls the "fish" up and on the end of his hook is his ring of keys. Fortunately, they wrapped around his line on the way down. Definitely the best catch of the day.

A fishing buddy puts a big house out on Howard Lake every year to fish with his wife and kids. He was fishing with them all and turned his back to help one daughter when he heard a splash. His youngest daughter, just learning to walk, was in the hole up to her armpits when he grabbed her and pulled her out. After he dried her off, redressed her and stopped her screaming, he set her down on the floor. She walked over to the hole, pointed, and said,"OOOHHHH." The next day, his fish house had a safety harness attached to the ceiling.

I don;t know if this quifies for down the hole, my nephew and myself were fishing on Balsum lake, he always left his tackle box open and setting on a seat in the boat, we were fishing northerns and he had a hit, the fish went around the back of the boat, the line crossed the top of his tackel box and sweep out pretty near all his shadraps, daredevils and 2 new wallie divers that never saw the water till then. He was 15 years old, he took it pretty good, but he sure looked like he wanted to cry. We left the lake early and restocked on lures. crazy.gif

Last winter a buddy of mine grabbed a co-workers cooking pot from him. He also threw a Busch Light in it. He apparently thought I was reaching for it as he climbed back into the house. It hit the hole and the weight of that beer can took that pot straight to the bottom...funny thing was a second or two later as we're watching it sink to the bottom, the Busch Light floated right back up. I wonder how good that beer was? I didn't have the heart to take it from him.

While fishing in our annual LOW tourney, I had my FRS radio in my lap for some reason, I got a bite on my jigging spoon and as I set the hook my radio fell down my set lines hole, as I reeled up the fish I decided I was not going to to tell anyone about the radio going down the hole, the fish was keeper and the team was happy, so I look over and my set lines bobber is down I set the hook and it feels like a nice one I pull it up and this is on the line. DSC00314.jpg

I caught my radio on the way down I had a small Genz worm on and it hooked on the SEEM of the radio not a hook or loop but the seem where the radio is put together it was amazingly lucky. grin.gif....dried her out for a couple weeks and the radio still works to this day.

a group of us fish LOW every January, Well one year a friend brought his father in-law. He had a dead stick with line that resembled weed wacker line. so the guy who had to fish with " Bob ", decided to let him use a couple of his regular poles. Bob, being new to ice fishing decided to use the 2 rods we provided for him and also his weed racker rod. well you know who decides to knock on the door-Friendly Game Warden and bob quickly throws one of the good rods down the hole. As Mr. Warden is chcking on fish and license, he notices Bob's line is down. Tells Bob to take it. Bob says, no it is ok it was down before you walked in. Mr. Warden now insists Bob pull it up. You know the rest- that rod he through down the hole was on the weed wacker rod. needless to say; Bob got a well deserved ticket for fishing with 2 many lines. The warden took the 2 good rods and told Bob he had to fish the rest of the weekend with the weed wacker dead stick. Bob did catch a dandy Pike on that dead stick- wanted to keep it , but it was in the protcted slot.
