Any downfalls to the fish trap voyager?

Bought one last year and very satisfied. Just right size for two guys and crowded with three. Cut a piece of outdoor carpet with holes for the area where you fish. Extended it out under the perimeter so canvas doesn't stick to the ice. One thing to watch out for is putting too much "stuff" in the sled. Unit weighs just under 90 pounds already. crazy.gif

This will be my 3rd season with the voyager and I am very happy with mine. It has held up well and very comfortbale to fish out of. If you are pulling behind a wheeler or snowmobile I would suggest some kind of runners, hyfax or similar, and a travel cover. I think they are great and lighter then some of the others but still durable. I bought mine before the trap link, nice cushy chairs and console type tray and I think these will make it all the more comfy. Good luck on your purchase!

For those who have or had, What are the advantages and Disadvantages?

I plan on picking one up soon, and I don't need/want any surprises after spending over $500.

Thanks in advance.

Hey John,

Good to see you on here again.

I had the opportunity to fish out of my neighbors Voyager and I have to agree with everything the above posters have said. Very roomy and comfy for two guys, we fished 3 guys one line a piece and that was fine also. But I would anticipate that a dad and a couple of kids would have plenty of elbow room. Comfy seating, handy tray in the middle, good venting, etc...

Hopefully you got the bugs worked out of the Polaris. If so I anticipate you buying the hitch and cover also.

Take care,

Jason in E.P.

I have the yukon and my buddy has the voyager. Both great units, but as mentioned earlier, be aware of packing too much into them. Even my Yukon gets heavy, however, I do not see it a problem if you have someone else to help you. DEFINATELY get the runners. Wether you get the clam hyfax runners or some kind of rigged up system, do it. Just my .02. I know you'll enjoy it.

I bought mine last year and have had no problems except the sled seems to be a little on the lighter built side. I punched a hole in mine from a ice chunk (not as heavy duty as an otter). I do like the room inside and the chairs are pretty easy on the bottom side when fishing all day. I added the hyfax and it makes a world of difference when towing. Without the hyfax it really wanders under tow. I think you will be happy with it.

The runners help a bit.. They really help out best for making the trap track straight, and keep a lot of wear off the tub itself from pulling the thing around...

The best thing to help out for pulling in the snow is to wax the tub periodically... Use regular car wax, and the tub will glide a lot better. Wax the runners too if you put them on... Also, it will help eliminate snow and ice build up on the tubs/runners... But, either way, the bigger the trap, the more of a hassle it will be to hand pull through the snow!!!

I'd bought one and took it back after having the zippers freeze shut two days in a row. I got an Otter and couldn't be happier. I didn't like the weight of the Clam and decided I didn't need to haul all that adjustable seat metal and compartments around. I got portable seats with storage under them for the Otter and I only take what I need depending on the # of people with. This year I'm putting a cot in the Otter and will sleep in it. It's by far more durable.

Buy One you'll love it... I got one last year and wish I would have gotten one earlier. Plus the seats are great, I have a bad back but can sit in the chairs all day long w/o any issues. Just a heads up it took me about 2 hrs to put it together in the garage... Once put together ..easy set up on the ice... Quality Unit

I have a Voyager and love it. That being said, if you are planning on pulling the sled by hand I would consider buying a Shappell. The NEW Voyager weighs in at over 110lbs. That is alot of weight to tow around by hand. The Shappell is a good quality sled with a comfortable bench seat, under seat storage, two zippered doors, and weighs only 71lbs.!

Just some food for thought. Good luck!

I put the hyfax runners on the house for pulling behind my 4-wheeler to save the bottom and tow straight, helped. It seems since I put the runners on that after im done fishing and pulling back to shore by hand that it is 3 times harder to pull.If I only used it by hand I personally would not put the runners on.It seems that the runners freeze up and pull hard, once you pull behind the 4-wheeler for a distance then it will pull by hand easy again.I personally dont believe you need runners if your always pulling by hand.

I have the Yukon and the only complaint I have it the weight. If you jump around a lot it can get heavy when loaded with gear. One thing about the Voyager - a friend of mine has one and he can not get his tail gate closed on his new truck (f150 crew cab w/short box). Something you might need to consider if you got one.

Good point. The voyager has a fairly long sled. As mentioned, it will not fit in the new F-150 crew cab pickups. It will fit in the Dodge and I am not sure about the Chevy. As for SUV's, full and midsized, they will fit in most of them with the back seat folded down. Just a heads up.

My Yukon fits in the back of my F150, but it would be a squeeze with 3 guys. You could have the 3rd guy sit on a pail, but each of you will have only one hole. Going in and out after tip ups could also be tough. How many times do you actually fish with three guys in portable. Works great with 2 guys and it would be fine with a guy and 2 kids. Get a Yukon and convince a buddy to get one and link them together!!!! grin.gif

I agree one hundred percent..get the Yukon. It can fit in the back of my mid size SUV easily, along with my aguer. I am definately not knocking the Voyager. As I mentioned earlier, my friend has it and it is awesome for fishing two with plenty of room. If transport is a concern and you do have a smaller truck/suv. Get the Yukon. I believe the difference of the sled length is only 6 inches. Either one of your choices, you can't go wrong.

thanks all for the replys, I never thought about it fitting into the bed of the truck, that is a deciding factor. I'll have to check the specs and see what the dim. are again. I drive an 02 chevy short box.

It should fit in your chevy, but it will not fit under a toneau cover if you have one. The metal pole supports are too tall for my access rollup. But, make sure to double check for yourself. Yukon is just 10" shorter and 13 pounds lighter. My buddy decided the weight factor was not all that different and went for comfort size. Great house. It fits in the back of his Tahoe so we use that most of the time instead of my truck. I don't know if a yukon would let you close the toneau either. Heck, my fishtrap pro is barley short enough to make it under the toneau. If you have a topper or no cover at all you have no problems! Good luck on your purchase.

I have had the guide for about 5 years now, its never let me down. The new ones are even better, you can't go wrong. They might be a little heavier than the otters but they are more comfortable. Also if you are using a snowmobile wieght probably won't be a big issue. The guide fits easily in my Murano. Ge the travel cover if you are going to be pulling behind a sled or hauling around in the back of a truck, its very handy.
