So how many of you realize site tagging is different this year?

BLB:

You should think about using Windows Terminal Services (standard with XP) to connect to work/home computer rather than VNC. VNC is only secure when properly tunneled through SSH, and that's a pain. I just switched and like it a whole lot better!

And quit chatting with Dave Parks at work! grin.gif

Thanks for the info. Count me in as one of the ones that had no idea about the site tagging change.

Count me among the ignorant! But I always have a bunch of zip-ties (cable ties, wire ties whatever you want to call them...) along anyway since they are what I use in Wisconsin in place of the string which is a pain. I'd recommend them to everyone.

Haven't you guys bought you licenses yet? The agent showed me the difference when I bought mine the other day. That one hole is perfed & you can break it easily with a pen or anything, the rest of the license is just about indestructible as far as ripping or puncturing goes. You needed string or something similar before anyway, so this really shouldn't require anything new & should be easier.

Sadly, the guy I bought my license from at Walmart had no clue. He stood there and told me it had an adhesive backing.

I would guess most large retail outlets you are going to run into the same thing.

Its not a big deal no, but its worth knowing that its changed.

lawdog,

Don't you bowhunt too? If you only gun hunt I agree, otherwise I assume you're being sarcastic, which I can certainly appreciate. I just bought my first 3 tags on Wednesday night, which is probably as late as I've bought a license as I ever have.

Would have got me too...

Joel-

Remember my Turkey Tag this spring?? Was that a precurser to the deer tags now or did they just load the wrong paper?? My turkey license didnt' have adhesive on the back either.

Here's another question then, if they are phasing out the adhesive on the back of the paper the licenses and tags are printed on, how am I going to affix my license to my ice shack this winter??? No glue? It won't work. grin.gif

Hanson:

I think you're right......that creeped me out a bit. Thought I was losing it after sitting in the rain for an hour and a half.

Cutting a slit in a turkey's ear to put the tag in will be difficult. The only ones I shoot are the dumb ones, so I'll be able to put the zip tie in one ear and out the other. grin.gif

Zip tie......great tip. Will be carrying a handful into the woods this fall, as the rest of my hunting party will not be as prepared.

Thanks!

Yup, got a good laugh Saturday morning watching my buddy try to split a site tag. He was doing fine but complained there was no adheasive. He got it split (must have a sharp knife) about 1/4 the way before I couldn't help my self anymore and had to tell him about the new method.

The clerk at Walmart didn't have a clue when I bought my license. And, no, I've never "needed string or something similar before". I've always just cut a slit in the lower leg (between the tendon and the bone) and slid the tag through there and attached it to itself via the adhesive.

Thanks for the heads up though, as I always like to avoid a ticket from the DNR, like I almost got 2 years ago. We hunt on my father's property and I shot a small buck about 200 yards from the road. My brother went ahead to go drop off the guns at the car and get a drag rope that we forgot behind. Meanwhile my dad and I started dragging it towards the car with the intention of tagging it near the car, but still on our property. The DNR happened to see my brother and stopped and came back with him to "look" at the deer. Upon seeing that it wasn't tagged, he wrote me a warning for not tagging it where it fell. He could have written me an actual ticket, but decided to play nice. Something else to remember...

I thought the reason for the sticky was so that once the tag was placed it could not be moved from one deer to another. It looks like now one could easily remove the tag and re-attach it to another at a later time. I realize you have to mark the day and time but I am sure a lot of tag switching could happen especially with the amount of party hunting in MN.

Now I think I have a problem? I just bought my license yesterday and the store I bought it from still printed it the white adhesive backed paper. It does not have the cut outs on it. I have seen the blue license with cut outs and I definitely have the old style. Will I have a problem with tagging, a technicality or will it be fine. Anyone else get the "old" style?

I would get on the phone tomorrow to the DNR or CO's and let them know of the problem in advance! When it is hunting season is not to find out from the local CO's that you have a problem! I am sure that they can help you out and get it fixed.

Yeh, I found this out after spending 10 minutes trying to remove the backing from the tag while getting eaten by the bugs last night. Finally I figured it out!! Now what really made me mad was that now it came of in the wind on the drive back home before I could register it. Who ever was thinking this idea for tags wasn't to bright!!!!! Last years tags where good ideas and they held up better for deer drags and wind of back trucks!!

That was my Dad's complaint when I told him about the new tagging system. Legally the deer has to be tagged before it's moved or transported which is fine. But when you drop a deer a half mile back in a swamp and then have to tag it through a little hole in piece of paper, there's a good chance of it getting ripped off. Something a little more permanent would be nice...
