It is a lot harder to hit them with a camera than a gun. When they are in close (which you want)you have to not only get them in the lens but get the camera to pull the focus on a fast moving target. More often than not you get a blur or only a part of the subject. If you take enough pics you get lucky and it all comes together in a few shots. Out of 150 shots that day I probably ended up with a dozen or so keepers.

These were taken the same day but did not get quite as sharp. The mallard was tough shot....just like with a gun, straight overhead and flying with the wind, not easy to hit.

koWALLEYEski we should bring the digital out fishing this weekend and we can get some shots of all the ducks buzzing over our heads. Maybe we can get one good one we could share with everyone.

Great pics. My kids are intrested in waterfowl photography. What's your set up? Camera/lens? Do you use some decoys to get them so close?

It is a Nikon D70 with a Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR...in the pics above I use a TC-14E teleconverter to get it to 280mm. The D70 camera body has come down in price as well as the Canon Rebel XT but the lens is the big cost and is what gives the picture the quality....there are no shortcuts as you get what you pay for when it comes to the lens.

I don't use decoys, like regular hunting scouting pays off. I like to find locations that have good access to areas where you can get close. With these pics I put on some hip waders and made it to a spot at the edge of the cattails. There were a couple hundred ducks sitting in the middle and every now and then a hen would get up and circle the lake with drakes in hot pursuit. Just like duck hunting they will surprise you and you are not ready or you get a great opportunity and blow the shot.

The initial cost to get into a good digital SLR is pretty steep however the processing costs are free and you print only what you want. There is no way the average guy could afford the developing costs (or time) to go out and shoot 300 shots at a time. Often, you can delete the obvious misses as they happen. Trying to get the camera to focus on a small target moving 50mph is not easy so there are a lot of misses.....especially when they are up against a low contrasting background.
