Just how many deer does one man need?

With all these seasons and states. I know a guy who used to live in MN but moved just across the boarder. Big time hunter, loves it just like me, you , everybody else.

This guy, I dont know if it's the whole state, lives in the "earn a buck" section of WI. He had last year, 2 archery tags (2 does, 2 bucks). A regular season tag (shoot a doe first to shoot a buck), and a muzzle loader tag. So if I am correct, he could have potentally shoot 8 Wisconsin Deer.

Now his family mostly lives here in Minnesota. I know he bought a Reg season tag and an Archery tag. That's 2 more deer. Plus the 8 from Wi = 10

I know he only got two last year, but what if he filled all 10. He definatly wanted too. When I questioned his ethics, he said " I have a big family " Which it's a family of 5, not that big.

What I am trying to get at is, is this guy going overboard or am I the crazy one? Would others do it, if they had the option?

I think the you are the crazy one. Usually the person calling for the ethics card of another legal hunter usually is the one failing the ethics plight. One of the codes of ethics is to not belittle another hunter's ethics.

Do not take this personally, this not a personal attack on you, dkhntr. This is just an answer your question.

We hunt for different reasons with different sets of ethics.

If your buddy is able to harvest 5 deer from one location, that location needed the harvesting. If he fails to fill his tags, thank him for his monetary contributions to the DNR. I contribute every year, some more so than others.

I think if you read through the posts here you will see that the general theme is that it is a personal choice. If the meat is getting used and that hunter decides he wants to max out his tags then so be it. Like I stated in my earlier post, we had a chance last year to take 35 deer if we had wanted to we chose to stop at 8. Other parties around us took more and I don't have any problem with that. Others posting here took all they could and that is their right and, as long as they are being utilized, there is nothing ethically wrong with it. The DNR knows, for the most part, what it is doing when setting up game harvest goals. It falls back to the individual hunter to decide what is right by him.

Oh please. this has nothing to do with ethics. I have never said anything about ethics. I am only asking this question because I thought it was an awful lot of deer. I am thinking of freezer room. That much meat (if he took all he could) has to weight as much as a full cow. If you read any of my other posts just on this topic I said I know he would not have wasted any of it. Am I offended that your implying my ethics? No, because I try to limit on ducks, geeese, pheasant, grouse everytime I am out. I just cant fathom that much venison. Partially because I am not big on hunting deer. It interupts my duck season grin.gif. I usually rely on my brother for venison. Besides, I already know I am crazy.

dk, i wonder how meny people here do not understand why you would want that meny game birds. why, because they would rather set down to a good ven. steak, stew, roast or what ever. boils dwon to weather you like meat with fur on it or useing steel or lead shot for fillings.

On Sat I just cooked up my last venison roast, I wish I had more left!! Out of two deer, all I have left is some chops that I want to throw on the grill - and a few pounds of burger. Tonights supper is venison burger on the grill! Next year I'm going for three deer for the freezer!!

Stuck a doe in Sept. and shot a small buck in Nov. Have been out of venison for 3 weeks. Next year I'll be "sticking" 2 does and shooting 1 buck and not 1 chop, steak or trimming will go to waste (my wife and daughter eat the jerkey trimmings faster than I can make it). I guess I'm pretty lucky, we love to eatem almost as much as I like to harvest them.

I read much of this string and would like to suggest a different perspective from my own experience.

I hunt in a party of about 8-9 people. Where I hunt, last year we could take up to 5 deer apiece. Do the math.

We did take 17 deer. What really got old was that we process everything ourselves. I was so tired of cutting up deer and packaging and freezer space.

We swore we won't be doing that again this year, no matter how many the DNR would like to see us take.

I agree huge with the person who posted the idea of getting meat to the needy. I wouldn't hesitate to take a couple deer if there was an easier way to get it processed.

Heck, I'll gut and skin the deer, no problem. It's the boning and packaging that takes the biggest amount od effort. More than I'm willing to offer and the cost of paying someone else to process is just too steep for my wallet.

I hear ya there Anthony. Once you're done shooting them is when the real work starts.

In my garage, it takes 4 guys pretty much all day and into the night to process our deer, sometimes longer, much longer. There were a couple of times we told ourselves we wouldn't shoot that many deer again. Now it's April and I'm out of vension. I wish we would have shot more.

Eveyone is absolutely entitled to their own opinion. I said it before and I'll say it again. If the meat doesn't go to waste, take as many as you can/like/want to/have tags for.

Yeah, I can see the butchering being a chore, but worth it. I guess I'm lucky in that I usually kill a couple bow season, maybe one gun, and one muzzle or late bow so the processing gets spread out more.

That picture is from Northeast Iowa, around the town of Lansing. I taught there for a couple years and that is not am abnormal thing.

You want to see big bucks, head to the mississippi river bottoms and coulee's down there. There is a guide and resort for hunting down there as well. It ain't cheap but the deer are huge.

I debate the 1 square mile part, but look at the background behind him, bluffs surrounding cornfields, that equals large herds of deer and big bucks. 14 tags meant 14 people as well.

amazing picture though

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
