Is my car considered a shelter?

I believe fishing out the window would require a license, I even think that a really strict officer could get you sitting in your vehicle w/ the door open as I believe that if a shelter has 3 sides it needs to be licensed but I may be wrong.

Just like Sgt. said olny if you are fishing inside with your line inside. If the hole is outside the car its not a fishing shelter. Unless you have an attached shelter to your car or truck. Like a leento or tent ect that your fishing in.We built a snowfort up at our cabin one year a while back and drilled some holes to fish out of. The DNR pulled up and told us you have to license unless the top is open. Also have to flag it off for safty witch was a good rule.

Did anyone else see the fish house a guy built out of hay bales? It was in the outdoor news last week I think. Looked pretty cool but he took it down after some concerns of frozen bales in the spring. It was licensed and legal.

Years ago, I was fishing out of my truck on Minnetonka, had a couple of holes cut and was sitting on the seat with the door open.

DNR guy comes along and tells me that if I fish out of the vehicle, it is considered a shelter and has to have a shelter lic.

I did'nt get a ticket, just a warning, which leads me to believe that it is up to the interpetation of the individual officer?

Also had it happen to me on Buffalo about 5 years ago and again, just a warning?

Time for someone offical to clear this thing up, anyone out there offical?

Now that's just a dandy question to ask on a site like this! lol Don't you know that 88.7 percent of all people reading here are self-professed officials (of something anyhow) and now you will get 88, maybe 89 replies! Way to go Grebe!

In the immortal words of my hero " B as in B S as in S". You already have your automobile licensed and now they want it to be double lic because you drive it on the lake and sit in it while fishing out the door!? Yes, I think it is safe to say that we as a society/state/culture have gone insane, Sounds like a bigger money grab - again....didn't our forefathers leave that other rathole continent for this reason?

I have a portable. BUT IF I were fishing out of my car and they gave me a ticket, I would be seeing that officer in court. That goes a bit far to me. Doesn't surprise me in this state though. I can see it now, your in your lawn chair on your dock holding a cane pole and the dnr pulls up. " Eh, you got a lisence for that chair"? shocked.gif

I think I'm going to call or e-mail the DNR and get an official statement from them. I'd love to see it in writing that a vehicle counts as a shelter if you're sitting in it, on it, or whatever. At the ice fishing contest on Long Lake last year, people were sitting inside their SUV's with the hatch up on back and the DNR dude that was there didn't say a word about it.

My favorite shelter is wool, good insulated cover-alls, Sorels, and a warm cap.

Where do I put the sticker? Maybe tell the officer where you want to put it if you get a ticket? Or do I just slap it on my forehead?

Not sure about Minnesota, but in Wisconsin it is actually not technically legal to fish at all from a private dock. They are only for aiding in launching a boat and can only be as long as necessary to get to 3'-0" of water.
