Opinions On A New Jiffy Auger Please!

I'm planning on purchasing a new Jiffy Legend Lightning. It's a 2 hp with an eight inch blade. It's the model 77 version. Do any of you fellow FM'ers own one or have had any experiences with one? Just looking for some advice. Thanks for any input. Here's a pic of the auger I'm looking at getting.

Thats my auger...I have been drilling holes with it for a few years now, with as many as probably 50 holes per day(I like to move around a lot)and have yet to replace the blades on it.

Jiffy are not the fastest auger out there, but they may be the easiest.. no need to sharpen and replace blades all the time...

I think I'm staying with Jiffy because I really liked the one I previously owned. It was a 3 hp, 10 inch. I sold it because I do a lot of "solo" fishing now in a one person fish trap....2 10 inch holes in that small of a space.....not a good idea! Lots of things seemed to disappear.

I've had a Strikemaster for 2 years and it's great. I broke my pull start cord twice and decided to take it to the factory in Big Lake to find out what the problem was. I met Cy at the service desk and he immediately suggested that I probably was "long-arming it", that is, pulling it out too far. Well he was right as I've got long arms(Ha).

He fixed it right there in front of me and showed me some tips on starting it. He's a great guy and offered me lots of info! I really appreciated this kind of service. All this and no charge to boot! I'm sold on this product!!

Happy New Year!

The Jiffy model 77 Legend is a great unit. Very dependable motor, minimal maintenance, chipper blades do not need to be sharpened on a regular basis, if blades need to be sharpened you can touch them up with a file, extremely durable gearbox and most of all you have owned a Jiffy and are looking to buy another one.

Great Auger for the Money!!!

I have that auger in a 9 inch. it runs awesome. good auger for the money and the blade stays sharp for a long time. the best 200 dollars I ever spent.

Mr. Walleyes, it is normal for the power head to have some play inside the auger shaft. every body has it.

Got to have a little play otherwise you can't get the powerhead off the bit. I have had ones with play that were still tough to get apart. By the way Jiffys are a great choice. Own 2 of them myself. Maybe take a look at the Stealth as well. I have one of these and love it.

A little historical FYI, since Jiffy invented power ice augers it's the rest of the ice world that runs "Backward". wink.gif

I have owned several brands of ice augers, Eskimo, StrikeMaster, and Jiffy. Srikemaster has a couple models I like and their service is good. At the end of the day I still go Jiffy because of the performance, durability, and ease of maintenance they offer.

For my money the best unit out it the Jiffy Stealth system. The Stealth is a ice eating beast. The 2 HP 8" or 9" Stealth is a rock solid investment that will last you years and years.

The Jiffy Electric Stealth 8" is a great ice house system. It opens old holes very well and it will not fume up the shack. This configuration is about as light a powered ice auger can get at present in an 8" model.

Another hot pick is the Husqvarna line of ice augers. They are very well built and super light. The power head weight is only 12.8 lbs, so with a 8" it still weighs in at near 22 pounds.

The price is the bad deal. The Husqvarna starts out at over $700 and can hit $900. Ya..a very spendy deal, but very Kewl.

I'd go Jiffy they set the standard in gas ice augers, given my experience, Eskimo, Strikemaster, and Jiffy ... Jiffy is by far the most durable and dependable. They seem to use more metal and less plastic. Just a note make sure you run the carb dry after each season or else it's a pain to get the bugger started the following year.

Just my $.02 grin.gif

Bought my first power auger in 1990. Jiffy model 30 3hp. Used it for 12 years and changed the spark plug one time and sharpened the blade once. Bought the Jiffy Stealth 2hp two years ago to get a little lighter as I get older. I loved the Model 30 and feel the same about the 2hp Stealth. I have never drained the gas out after the season because I believe that the seals may dry up. I leave gas in the tank that has been conditioned. I have never had a starting problem with either auger. I have never owned another brand, and I won't badmouth them either. If you want to be fast buy for speed. I'm not out there to race, I'm there to enjoy a day of fishing. If it ever gets to be that competitive for me, I'll find an ice fishing show on tv. Buy whatever makes you happy.

Thanks for all the replys felles, great advice. I was talking with a local sports shop owner and he said the new strikemaster 224's were have some problems and he refuses to sell anymore of them. He got a call from the people at strikemaster and they told him they were having some cutting problems. That's just what I heard. Maybe some of you owners of the 224's can look farther into it.

I own a Jiffy must be the same one Cold one Sd has Model number is worn off. I call it the one arm knuckle buster, It had a handle on top with one long arm to hold, it would spin in a circle and smack my fingers mad.gif I dont know how many times I dropped it on the ice and let it spin, The thing still runs so No need to buy a new one, I hope it dies one day so I can get a new one I would say Jiffy makes a real tuff auger, I updated it to the new type handle for safety. laugh.gif

I guess my memory failed me. My first auger was an Eskimo. On about the 10th hole that I drilled with it, the corner of the crankcase blew out. I took it to the shop and they put a new motor on it. The old one didn't have caged bearings. I got it back, started it to make sure that it ran, sold it and bought a jiffy (1992). I never looked back. The guy that bought the eskimo is still using it and likes it. I'm a casual icefisherman and that is the way I like it.

I decided with the 2 hp 8" Jiffy Stealth. It was a little more expensive the the Legend Lightning, but I think it will be worth it in the end. I haven't even started it yet. I'll let you know how it works.

MRWALLEYE2005-

I'm not sure if the JiffyPop joke applies to the 2hp Jiffys but the older 3hp models are LOUD!!!!

If you are ever out on a lake and nobody is in a 1/2 mile of you and you hear an auger rapping away, its a 3hp Jiffy.

It kind of sounds like-

Waaaahhhhhhh...pop.pop.pop.pop....waaaaaahhhhhh...pop.pop.pop...waaaaaahhhhhh!!
