Deer Hunter's Checklist

Recommended Posts

Every year I talk about starting a list so I don't forget anything before I leave for deer opener. So lets start a list here for everyone to use.

  • License/doe permit
  • Gun (sighted in)
  • Ammo
  • gun cleaning tools
  • gun case(s)
  • Scents
  • Cover Scent/Spray
  • TP
  • Binoculars
  • Blaze jackets (light and heavy depending on the weather)
  • coveralls
  • backpack
  • matches/lighter
  • compass/GPS(extra batteries if you carry the GPS)
  • boots(pair for walking and pair for standing)
  • Gloves/mittens
  • handwarmers
  • hats
  • Grunt call & doe bleat call
  • rattlin' horns

If you use an ATV remember to check tire pressure and gas up before you hit the woods. Make sure your ATV is in good working order before you head out there. Nothing like getting stuck in the woods, or worse yet stuck at your truck on opening morning!

What else am I forgetting to add to the list?

The optimist in me thinks about field dressing supplies;

---Knife (or 2 both sharp)
---latex gloves
---rope for dragging and hanging
---Baby wipes (in zip lock bag) they stay wet even below freezing and are great for wiping blood off. (and other things if TP runs low) grin.gif
---Zip lock bags for heart/liver(if you endulge)

Other items include
---Camera for Pics of my 13 year old with his first deer! wink.gif best one will be at the site!
---1 ltr wide mouth pop bottle (empty) for waste recepticle while in the tree
---Something back at camp to toast with grin.gif

"Toast the kill or you kill no more!"

18" zip-ties! They have replaced duct tape in my world of all purpose life-savers. I use them to hold together the hang on stand, hold the anal-vent closed during dressing, attach the tag to the hind leg and a million other things. They take up no space.

If I could add one thing I think is not mentioned, I never leave the house without my back support belt. Drag'n a heavy animal out of the woods is'nt a small task and anything that can aid in preventing injury should be considered. Later Boar
