Snow Storm 3

Recommended Posts

I've got everyone home right now and I am preparing for the third storm of the season.  I was told after the last two duds "it's better to be safe than sorry" by my weather mentor Paul Douglas so I'm heeding that awesome advise.  Flashlight batteries are good, candles are good, hand crank radio turned to 'CCO and all the blankets are folded neatly in our fruit cellar.  Next thing on my Winter Storm list is to check Paul's page for advise.  I fired up the google and checked in to Paul's page.

The good news is that even he isn't calling for snow or very much at least.  I scrolled down a bit and he discussed the Sunday Vikes game being the next coming of the Ice Bowl...now we were getting somewhere!  Vague panic style material by Paul was gripping my soul now.  I read some of his suggestion that peril was right around the corner for players and fans on Sunday but then I hit the jackpot!  Dirty air.

Paul explained that Minnesota has the "20th dirtiest air of all the states!"  A large photo of a gigantic industrial smokestack emitting thick toxins was posted next to the warning.  He told of huge globs of soot, global change, polar bears swimming aimlessly due to the polar ice cap disappearing.  I ran to the hardward store and purchase their last coal shovel figuring I could easily clean my driveway of all clunks of carbon that fall from the sky tomorrow instead of snow.

We're still discussing hiding out but now will move upstairs instead of the fruit cellar to avoid the heavy air coming.  Take care folks!

Ha Ha!!!  The "real" storm of the 2014 firearms deer season was very real.  20 inches in one drop I came home to.  Had to borrow the neighbors blower.  Mine was on it's way out after 20 years.  Next day I bought a brand new one.  Only used it twice after that.  So the wise man should buy a snow blower and then there will be no snow.  I look for more cold weather than any kind of serious snow.  CCO is the worst of the bunch as far as the panic button.  good luck.

I'm calling that a whiff too but won't count as 0 for 3 to be fair about the snow.  It was supposed to be foggy which I assume led Paul to ponder the dirty air, "they will wake up to fog and think dirty air!"  There is zero fog and zero wind so he was wrong...again.

This theory also works with fish houses!! I bought a new ice castle in July, and it has yet hit the ice!! For those who hate winter, you can thank me later, and if you feel like buying me a gift to show your appreciation, I like Miller Lite!!

Hey Grumpster  While I had a short stint at Fort Dix New Jersey,  I dated a WAC who lived near Hewitt NJ [sp] that's near upstate NY?  That's where I learned that they didn't have pop, they had soda.  Well this storm dumped 3 inches on us as of this morning.  Time to panic and get the blower out.  I have a rule here that anything under 2 inches stays. More and I blow it out.  Besides I kind of like getting the blower out 3 or 4 times a year.  good luck.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
