Favorite meal for the "morning after"

Recommended Posts

As I continue to monitor the second pulse in my head this morning, I'm thinking of ways I can continue to put-off cleaning up after sat night's party and what I could eat/drink that might make me feel a little better... Seems fitting on New Year's Day to start a thread on favorite cures for the the old longneck flu.  What do you like to whip-up the next day to bombard your ailing stomach with massive calories and kill that headache?  Maybe you have a secret cure? maybe you're a "hair of the dog" guy?

I haven't done it in YEARS but I would again in a second if I could find someone to go with me.  Back in College, we'd probably roll out of the rack around 10:30 or 11:00 after a good night and we'd hit up the local Chinese Buffet. Often times we'd be outside waiting for them to unlock the door.  Greasy, salty, fatty, filling and TERRIBLY delicious.  It's gross, but I think what worked about it is that it wouldn't "stay with you" long - and in the process it took the toxins from the night before right along with it!  All I know is that I'm not sure how I survived those years. The human body can sure take a lot of abuse.

Always used to start the New Year at a Chinese place.....we always believed it was supposed to be good luck....:)

You're right about the abuse, just a tip: Do NOT combine pickled herring, shrimp, Lil' smokies in BBQ pepper sauce, asst cheeses, and corned beef dill dip with onion crackers, if you want the house to smell fresh. Wear mask in bathroom.

hair of the dog can work and be fun but for me put me in a general funk and just delayed the inevitable, which at the time seems like an option, but a bad one.

There are two answer's but I will give the one appropriate for this situation, time.  Eat and if you can take a nap at 130pm.

I don't know why but i really never got much of a hangover with booze or most beers.  Hamms, Blatz, and the Green Death did give me a headache though.  Wine is a different story.  Doesn't matter what kind, too much of it and it was hang time.  I just dealt with it.  Never was much for taking pills.  I tried the tomato juice with beer deal for a hangover.  I don't know if it worked but I did drink a few of those and forgot I had a headache.  good luck

The Chinese things sounds like a great idea.  A good breakfast hits the spot.  Like this morning with the corned beef hash with a a couple of sunny side up eggs on top.  Awesome even if not for a hangover.  When I was college aged I used to like to make a chocolate malt first thing.  Once I killed one and was making malt number two and then I noticed the chunks in the milk.  I drank the first one so fast I didn't even notice the sour milk.  Yuk.

The tomato beer thing sounds like a winner too.

Oh man, sour milkshake! That would do me in!

Anyway, I feel in much better now.  Didn't really eat a lot but was able to sneak in a little nap and then I took the kids outside sledding for a while.  The cold fresh air was the ticket.  Thank God that hangovers for me are pretty rare these days.

I will say that if you're on a guys weekend or have an occasion where "you just gotta" get back on the horse... one drink we discovered in college was mixing Captain Morgan and OJ.  Much smoother and tastier than a screwdriver and nowhere near as filling as a bloody mary.  Man, that takes me back... Haven't had one in years!  and that's probably a good thing.  Maybe for ice fishing weekend in a couple of weeks with the guys.

Green Death, one of the few beers I miss.... as for hangovers we always ate a big breakfast before we went to bed. In my younger days there was a truck stop here in town that served two eggs, two pieces of toast and a slice of ham served on a platter covered in American fries. That usually did the trick, best part back in the day it was a buck ninety-nine

I hate it when I can't edit my posts, I was not finished but here is a better description of my last post.

Green Death, one of the few beers I miss.... as for hangovers we always ate a big breakfast before we went to bed. In my younger days there was a truck stop here in town that served two eggs, two pieces of toast and a slab of  ham that covered a platter size plate. To top if off the platter was covered in American fries and diced onions. That usually did the trick, best part back in the day it was a buck ninety-nine!

My cure was always to eat something before going to bed.  Sometimes that included getting a sober driver to take us to the grocery store where 4-5 drunk guys would run down the aisles looking for the frozen pizza.

I would wash the pizza down with a lot of water and Tylenol.  The next morning I would wake up and drink as much water as i could stomach and take 2 more Tylenol and then go back to bed for awhile.  The next time I woke up i'd feel mostly ok and then I'd go about my day as normal.

For me the biggest thing was always the headache which is from being dehydrated.  If I could combat that then I'm usually good to go.  Now that I'm older and smarter I'll make sure to drink water throughout the night of drinking.  That usually prevents the problem to start with.

The few times i got wasted bad, when I was young, gave me the heaves, terrible nausea and vomiting.  It was so unpleasant that I had to recalibrate my consumption to limit wastage.  I can't recall being significantly hung over since beyond a general fatigue, even with being pretty happy on occasions.   Maybe I have just been lucky. I sure wouldn't want the heaves back.

Make yourself a bowl of comfort food...a bowl of stuffing, mashed taters, etc. Stay away from dairy and spicy or greasy gravies. Drink lotsa water before going to bed and when ya get up. It's the congeners in the type of alcohol that allegedly cause it. I still remember that from some food classes. Funny THAT stuck in my head.  I never really had hangovers, but every once in a while...
