Protection from the sun

Clothing with UFP, including gloves and buff at times

This is what I am doing. I went to the dermatologist last month with something on my leg. That turned out to be scar tissue. However, the doctor searched my whole body and I ended up having a piece of pre-cancerous tissue removed from my face. The doctor showed me various areas of sun damage to my skin. His recommendation is covering the skin. Sunscreen wears off and needs to be re-applied. I also don't like sunscreen on my hands while fishing.

Back in the days when things made sense a "buff" was what we called a bandana. Except ours was usually a red or blue plaid affair and we used it for everything. Instead of a "Tilley hat" we just slapped an old straw farmer hat or cowboy hat on our head or maybe a John Deere or FarmAll "gimme hat."

Most of us died off of something other than skin cancer and most had not heard or it or worried about it much.

But then, we were sorta slow about a lot of things. Hell, used to be a Martini was made with gin and a hint of french vermouth.....not chocolate and coconut essence.

You sound like my buddy. Farmboy from Indiana. Spent summers in the fields with no shirt. Now has two nasty scars from where they carved the Melanoma out of him. He wears a great big hat and long sleeves now, and is good buddies with his dermatologist. frown

I really like my Tilley hat too but even the Under Armor brand is 1/2 the price and look pretty much the same. Tilley's are the best though. I didn't like the nylon(?) thin floppy kind, I thought it was sticky on my skin. Mine is the Airflo, and take their advice and buy it a little big so it's loose on your head.
