Swallowed Antifreeze

Recommended Posts

OK... I know the first initial thought would be, how stupid are you. Now that we have that out of the way I have a quick question. Last night at about 930 I was putting a radiator in a bus. I did not have a pump to fill the radiator back up so I decided to try to syphen the antifreeze out of the barrel. I definitely got a mouth full. I immediately spit it out, but I know the mouth absorbed some. It was not sweet, it was terrible by the way. I rinsed my mouth out, but had that taste until about 11 when I was able to brush my teeth. I am a little worried about complications. Everything I have read so far states I am going to die. I am 27, weigh about 280, and the antifreeze was red, not green. Can someone give me a little info on this? Thanks a lot!!

Its been almost 24 hours, if you don't have any problems peeing and feel ok you are fine. Just one question. Why do you wait a whole day and then post on a outdoor forum to see if you are ok rather than call the poison control center immediately after it happened? confused

I did call the poison control center... she had asked how much I had swallowed. She said if I hadn't swallowed more than a Tablespoon I should be fine. Well I am a bit of a hypochondriac, so I make myself believe I have the symptoms, and how am I supposed to know if I Swallowed more than a table spoon? I wasn't thinking that as I had antifreeze in my mouth

Hope this makes you feel better... About a month ago I was working on the snowmobile in the garage and I had at a early time put antifreeze in a water bottle so I could bring some with me to top of the level in the sled (had to drain the system earlier) Anyways I was drinking water out of the same kind of bottle. Went to take a drink of water and took a big swig of antifreeze and you are right, it tastes like dump. Spit it out without swallowing any and brushed my teeth. After a month I am just fine, didn't even worry about it, I'm sure you will be fine too. And yes I poured that antifreeze back in the antifreeze jug.

They put an additive in it to make it taste bad, to prevent animals from drinking it. Honestly, you will be fine. Being a mechanic for 20+ years, I have swallowed plenty of antifreeze in my days. I wouldnt recommend it, but you will be fine.

Sorry bud, but this thread made me laugh. If you truly just had some in your mouth and spit it out, weighing almost 3 bills, your going to be fine. Poison control for liability reasons is going to error on the cautious side. A quick search reveals the lethal dose for someone your size is around 6 ounces at full strength ….a beer can's worth at 50/50. Am not a doctor and did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night…...

What is actually true is the LD50 is six ounces, LD means lethal dose, which means out of every 100 people who drank 6 ounces 50 died. I have no idea how they get those numbers. 6 ounces is about two large gulps which with that taste would have to be intentional. I have a good friend who works in the poison control center who taught me pharmacology and toxicology. What they won't tell you is alcohol is actually an antidote for it. If you drink 16 ounces and go to the ER they put you in an ICU and put you on an ethanol drip for about two days to get it out of your system, so kind of a perma drunk. The antifreeze and ethanol/alcohol battle for the same receptors in the body and ethanol/alcohol wins and binds better with the receptors so they do this until you urinate out the antifreeze. So the answer is to well drink BOOZE! And well keep a nice buzz going for 48 hours. Sounds weird but it's legit. If you doubt me google ethanol or alcohol for antifreeze ingestion. Happy Drinking

LOL, I think the CO in the shop has done more damage over the years, then anything. The boss would keep buying CO detectors for the shop, but the dang things would always go off, so we would unplug them. We finally got one with a readout, the gave us an actual ppm read out. I think warning level was 200, well I dont remember it ever going under 1500 in the winter. The owner even thought it would be safer to have like 3 of them in the shop. They all read above 1500 all winter. Finally after 10 years they put in an air exchanger, but it would blow the outside air directly at my bay, so I wasnt a fan of having it on in the winter.

It was kinda funny how everyone would get headaches after the first few weeks of having the shop doors closed, also after a couple weeks of having them open. Our bodies got addicted to the CO.

The little bit of antifreeze I drank over the years, didnt have a chance to effect me, everything else was killing me much faster.

i wonder who volunteered for that test

I know what you mean, but those guys that are into toxicology can get way out there, heard some weird Christmas party stories. You got to think, chemists turned towards the dark side to make dope cause well their smart and make more money that way. I have volunteered with some police departments to help confirm the accuracy of there blood alcohol monitors, how often do you get the chance to drink on someone else's dime and get a sober ride and figure how many cold ones it takes you to get to .08?

They get those numbers by giving the chemical to rats, and figuring the LD50 from there, generally in mg substance per kg body weight.

after working on fire trucks and ambulances for most of my adult life, i am with Scott K that we have had more antifreeze ingestion that anyone could possibly think. We all think the engine is drained, radiator is drained, but when we are under them and pull that bottom hose, more goes in and on us that we possible could think would be left.

I got a mouth full of hot oil from a gas engine that was dumping fuel into the crankcase. That took a couple days to full get the oil stain off my face and the gas smell out of my nose.

You will survive, but forget the plastic water bottles for anything but water.

There are worse places to get that stuff...cough... on!

I can relate to this. Worked in a service station when I was 16. The Old Timer who worked during the day had spliced a hose on one of the pumps with a chunk of steel pipe and electrical tape. Of course on a Sunday morning a customer comes in, turns on the pump and the splice comes apart spraying him in the eyes and me from the neck down.

I grabbed him and drug him to the wash room. While he was washing out his eyes he tells me to take off my clothes shocked. He no more than said that and I realized why. HOLY $^!T THE BURN. Talk about Great Balls of Fire!!
