My question;

Is it legal to shoot a buck/doe with a bow in a HC area and then go to a managed area and shoot 2 more does with bonus tags?

Their response;

Yes, that is legal. You can only use the weapon for which you have a license. For example, you could take all of these deer by archery if your main tag was an archery license.

That's wrong! I can show past emails reading the opposite. With that logic I could hunt H.C, managed and intensive harvest getting total of 8 deer...Id be careful the info line is some receptionist that thinks they know, I have been given false info multiple times. Good luck!

Except the state wide bag limit is only 5 regardless of when, where, or how you are hunting.

I don't see why it would matter which order you hunt the different zones as long as you only harvest the number of animals allowed from each zone and stick to the 5 deer limit. If you want 5 deer and plan to hunt HC, Managed, and Intensive it really shouldn't matter what order you hunt them from a population standpoint. The same amount of deer are harvested they just die a different day of the week than if you hunted them in a different order.

Just keep in mind if you plan to hunt HC or lottery your main tag needs to be used in that zone. So if you tag a doe in a HC zone you no longer have your buck tag to work with.

It's all very clearly stated in the rule book if you take the time to read it. The statewide limit is 5 (with Metro, landowner, and early antlerless being the exceptions).

You can take 1 deer in any ONE lottery/Hunter's Choice area. That must be your regular license and not a bonus permit. You can use bonus permits to take up to 5 deer total in any combination of other multi-deer areas.

If you use your regular license tag in an area that is not a 1-deer area, then you cannot hunt in a 1-deer area after that during the same season. The question to ask would be whether you can tag a deer with your archery license in a multi-deer area, then use your firearms license in a 1-deer area. That is not explicitly answered in the rule book that I can find.

Lottery

if you take a deer in a lottery deer area, you cannot take another

deer in another lottery or hunter choice deer area. However, you can take

deer in managed or intensive deer areas.

Hunter's Choice

if you take a deer in a hunter choice deer

area, you cannot take another deer in another hunter choice or lottery deer

area. However, you can take deer in managed or intensive deer areas

Managed

the bag limit for managed deer areas is two deer

and hunters can use any combination of licenses and bonus permits to tag

both deer.

Intensive

Intensive Deer Areas—using any combination of licenses and permits,

the bag limit for intensive deer areas is ive deer

So I can shoot two antlerless deer in a managed area on bonus tags, and then hunt any zone in the state w/ my either sex tag? Is that correct?

Yes and No, at least base on my understanding.

In a managed zone, you can only use 1 bonus tag then you must use your either sex tag regardless if the second deer is a doe or buck.

By using your either sex tag, you are now done in all lottery, hunter choice and managed zones. The only zone you can hunt is intensive or party hunt.

This statement is true, however the origional poster asked a question about using two bonus tags in a managed zone. Perfectly legal. You can then hunt ANY OTHER NON MANAGED ZONE and shoot another deer, must use either sex tag in hunter choice/lottery, or can get another bonus tag and shoot deer in intensive or use your either sex tag in an intensive as well.

So several of us have been wrong I got info back from a CO below.

Hey Jayson,

The answer to the first question is yes.  You could take two antlerless deer with a bow in a managed area (1 deer is tagged with your archery license and 1 is tagged with your bonus tag) and then purchase a Firearms deer license and take a deer in a lottery or Hunters choice area.

The second question would be yes, you could shoot a deer in a a lottery/hunter choice area and then purchase 2 bonus permits for the managed area.

I hope this helps if not shoot me another email and I will try to help ya out.

I'll post it again for those who didn't read, and even underline the statement that gives you your answers. ANY COMBINATION OF TAGS in Managed/Intensive areas. For all the DNR cares, you could use 5 bonus permits to take 5 antlerless deer in an intensive area.

My confusion is the two deer in managed areas. Says nothing about shooting two does with bonus permits in one zone, shooting two does with bonus permits in another zone, then a buck in a hunters choice zone

You can only shoot 2 deer total from managed zones ... not from each managed zone

TruthWalleyes, read again from the DNR HSOforum!

Statewide Bag limits for Deer

A hunter may tag one legal buck per year, without exception. Although

hunters can buy all three licenses, the bag limits may not allow all three tags

to be killed in a single deer area. it is the hunter’s responsibility to know the

bag limit for the areas they hunt. the statewide bag limit for deer is five.

Lottery Deer Areas—the bag limit is one deer total per year, regardless of

license type. if you take a deer in a lottery deer area, you cannot take another

deer in another lottery or hunter choice deer area. However, you can take

deer in managed or intensive deer areas, as well as some special hunt areas

with a valid permit, provided you adhere to the regulations and bag limits for

those areas. Bonus permits are not valid in lottery deer areas.

Hunter Choice Deer Areas—he bag limit is one either-sex deer total

per year, regardless of license type. if you take a deer in a hunter choice deer

area, you cannot take another deer in another hunter choice or lottery deer

area. However, you can take deer in managed or intensive deer areas, as well

as some special hunt areas with a valid permit, provided you adhere to the

regulations and bag limits for those areas. Bonus permits are not valid in

hunter choice deer areas.
